I recently graduated from Michigan College of Beauty in October of 2018 from the esthetics department. Though the curriculum offered was great, the delivery severely lacked. The textbook and study outlines we followed offered great information in regards to the esthetics field, however I felt as if I were teaching myself throughout the entire duration of my six month education. The instructors taught us the massage movements for a basic European facial, and then we were on our own from there. Every facial or treatment from there on out was either outlined for us on paper, or only demoed once. The program is a very self-teaching type of program, and if you donāt pick up the information fast enough, youāll be lost entirely. Now let me tell you about the sanitation and safety in the clinic and classroom itself. Point blank: there is none. The entire school, and classrooms, are completely falling apart. I mean that quite literally. The classroom is littered with broken equipment, and the building is in dire need of remodeling. Most of the mag lamps and steamers were broken partially, if not entirely. Some of the steamers had to be restarted by shoving a pen into the reset switch and fiddling around until the machine magically came on. Not to mention the mass amount of exposed wires and safety hazards around for clients and students alike to be subject to. Electrical hazards are just one thing. Health hazards were probably the biggest issue I found during my time at MCB. When receiving a facial, you should always use clean sponges on every client. And by that I mean: clean, NEW sponges. Every time. It is something every esthetician should be aware of. Something we learned, but of course they never have their students practice considering all they did was throw the facial sponges in the washing machine and reuse them. Not only that, but the cotton balls used on clients were made by hand ā a trade the industry loves us to know, which is great ā but instead of telling students to wash their hands, wear gloves, or work on a sanitary work station, students make them in the classroom, with bare, unwashed hands, on dirty tables every day. The sanitation standards that are outlined for us in our textbook and LAW BOOKS are seldom followed or enforced by any of the instructors at MCB, and therefore they go unknown or forgotten by students who are none the wiser until itās too late. Finally, let me talk about the staff. Though there are some instructors at MCB who genuinely love their jobs, their students, and strive to educate and empower us through the program to become the best we can be, there is of course the bad bunch as well. MCB is a school, yet it is run more like a business rather than an educational facility. Students are treated like employees, and the educators are their bosses. Whenever confrontation arose in the classroom between students āand oh was there PLENTY OF THAT ā the staff of the school would often turn a blind eye. There would be fights in classrooms where staff would walk away and sometimes even leave school grounds to go home rather than intervene. If ever staff was involved, it was always a battle to try to get anything resolved. The issues would always be blamed on the students, rather than lack of supervision or proper education, and we were often times left fending for ourselves. I spent months debating as to whether or not I should make this review, but I decided it is better to say something about my experience so hopefully the school can realize these faults and fix them as quickly as possible, or on the flip side, another prospective esthetician can know all their options, and whatās in store for them. Now, I am happy to say I am licensed, however if given the opportunity to go back and choose a different school, I wouldnāt even hesitate. I would never go...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreAs a former graduate student of Michigan College of Beauty, I just want to say , I really do wish I would have went a different route with my choice. It was by far the worst experience a person , let alone a student could experience.
Iāve never felt so mis understood & mis lead in my life , Iāve never wanted to actually experience what my ancestors experienced , I never wanted to see how it felt to be treated differently because of my skin color , I never wanted what was supposed to be the best experience of my life to end up the worst.
But luckily I managed to push the whole way through while being treated unfairly.
It all started after completing the first corse which was the junior room ( Ms pippin) the absolute best teacher / peopleās person
My first time meeting Ms Kris ( the manager ) I asked for more Tissue for the bathroom , she responded ( itās āTOLIET PAPER , NOT TISSUEā ) in a rude way. Immediately after that I was terrified to even speak to her , she just comes off so rude , as if you did something to her. Never not once did she ever introduce herself to the students , seem interested in our talents or even crack a smile on her face when it comes to colored students. She showed favoritism to certain students & gave them certain rights to do things , when we are all literally here for the same thing.
No one knows how hard it is to get up & come here everyday & basically work for free for a year straight without missing a day or let a long one minute , until itās you. I had to take multiple leaves due to the fact that Iām human , & life run its courses. Once I was over contract I found out about staying later to make up your hours from 2 of my class mates that have been staying together , I asked Ms kris if it was okay if my & my friends could do the same , next thing you know the rule all of a sudden changed & only one person could stay behind at a time.
So At this point Iām feed up & somebody need to hear how this lady treats black people cause it was just so unfair , why make it hard for somebody who is trying to graduate like everyone else.
Me & my friends were in a car accident right in front of the school & she didnāt even care if we were okay , she care more about the monthly payments then our well being.
So please if you a genuine , kind hearted , caring black person , do not make the mistake of coming here like I did. Good luck to the students who have already signed over there life.
Oh & Btw
if you clock in after at 8:31 itās automatically 15 minutes late 8:46 is automatically 25 minutes late.

Ā Ā Ā Read moreWent to school here October 2022- March 2023 esthetics program in Troy MI... Going to school here was a nightmare. So much miscommunication between staff, instructors donāt know anything + need more training all while paying 12k$+ and walking out without knowing anything. I will mention that the goal of this school is to only get you ready for state boards and they told us that at the end when I finished which sucked cuz had I known that I would have gone somewhere else and taken my money to learn throughout the duration of school. Getting ready for state boards was a week thing so spending 12k for a week of preparing for state boards was a slap to the face. Anything I learned was from YouTube videos / podcasts on my own time. When you tour this school make sure you ask every question( seriously anything you can think of) , cuz some will lie or they didnāt know so they made up stuff. Everybody says something different. For example I paid 15$ in the beginning and I thought it was for state boards and she assured me and said ānope! You wonāt have to pay anything this is it!ā 245$ later that was not the case. Kit is 2k so be warned that the things you get does not equal the 2k. This school is out dated and old as they well know which is fine but Iām not sure where each students tuition is going to if thereās no remodel/ updates. Esthetics instructor were nice but they were all reading from the same book I bought that (Tuition) so I spent 12k to learn absolutely nothing. I mean 0. Hardly any point for the instructors because any question I would ask they didnāt know the answer or they gave me the wrong one just to give an answer. Things were demoād once which is kinda silly. There goes my tuition for the one time demo. Some instructors were younger than me and 24. I was expecting instructors to be full of knowledge and I would learn so much from there but that did not happen. Lots of other ridiculous things happened but the one that thing that makes me upset after all of this is that these people can take my hard earned money and not care that these students arenāt learning anything. I canāt believe I have to tell my friends and family that I learned nothing. Thatās what keeps me up at night considering theyāve been open since the 90s so to me itās just to make money and could care less about the students education. We voiced our concerns throughout the whole 6 months and they only approached us when we were graduating. Doesnāt look good as did many other things. If you need help with state boards come here but be prepared to learn absolutely nothing. Tour every school and ask all those questions as well as confirming with...
