At the time of posting my rating, staple MTG singles were overpriced, Signature Spell Book Jace was being sold at $10 over every other store in the area, and a friend of my was told to shop elsewhere if we didn't like the prices. As google says, I haven't been to this store for over two months at the time of writing this, I'm not too sure if things have changed or not. I know for a fact that the prize support has improved somewhat, changing from the prize-wall bought with coins given to tournament standings (AKA Amazingly Depressing Cryptocurrency), to what is now the same coins holding a $3 store credit value that you cannot put onto your account and only are redeemable upon purchace of product or exchanged for in print standard legal booster packs. While it's not ideal, in the sense that I can now lose $3 because they decided that forking over a large amount of money toward custom poker chips as their prize support was a bad idea... Maybe they shouldn't have tried to fix what wasn't broken. The original prize system was either getting packs or credit upon the completion of a tournament, like every other store does, but ya know, gotta make things needlessly complex and shove all the bad that comes of it to the people who want to help keep you in business, it's an improvement regardless of how asinine it is!
Cards are overpriced here, plain and simple, don't buy them, and don't sell anything that isn't on their buy-list. A friend of mine emailed Dusty Ochoa (Store Owner) about the overpricing of staple cards, and after a week of so of back and forth between the two, Dusty just said, If you're not happy with the prices, go somewhere else. If the owner is happy with people shopping elsewhere, I highly encourage you to do so, your wallet will appreciate it!
Here's a perfect example of their over pricing, Arclight Phoenix is a sought after card in both the MTG Modern and Standard format, on TCG Player (nationwide online store front) the card retails for $20 for the Market price and $23 for the listed median price. Amazing discoveries is selling the same exact card for $27 for both near mint and lightly played copies. On top of that $27 for an Arclight Phoenix you have to pay Arizona state and county sales tax (totaling 6.1% of the total purchase price) IN ADDITION to sales tax you either have to pick up the card in-store or pay $2.92 for shipping (Shipping based on AZ to MA, sales tax won't be factored in for out of state purchase). So for the high price of $28.74 you can purchase an Arclight Phoenix and pick it up in-store, if you want it shipped to you instate, you'd have to pay $31.66 to receive it withing 3-5 bushiness days ($29.91 if purchasing from out of state). Alternatively, you go to TCG Player Direct which has free shipping for orders over $25, buy a NEAR MINT Archlight Phoenix for $19.95 AND have either $5 more to spend on other cards or pay $0.99 in shipping, receiving it 3-5 business days later. It just makes so much more sense to buy online and not have your wallet sucked dry.
I'm all for shopping local, I rarely order online because I believe in supporting the place that has structured tournaments, friendly staff, and a warm and welcoming community (which Amazing discoveries has all of this, it's really great to see such an amazing community) but I find it increasingly more difficult to support the establishment when they are blatantly trying to rip you off with over pricing their product and refusing to do anything about it because they are "loosing money." To an extent, there is some justification for cards being a tad bit more expensive than online, and yes managing a local business is hard, you often fall into traps of buying a store in Casa Grande and using it as a pseudo warehouse, I get that. But if I have to pay a 50% markup just to get a piece of cardboard shipped to my house, then I've got better places to spend my minimum wage budget then at Amazing...
Read moreThis store is a cancer. The atmosphere is toxic and the staff are arrogant and not friendly (often condescending). The only mention-able employee is Paul, who is the only person that genuinely cares about customer service and experience. The turnaround time for shipment orders from other store facilities is more than a week. I recently placed orders at the beginning of July and have yet to receive them. My most recent order I expedited shipping via priority mail and still my order has not even had a status change denoting shipped.
The "Any order placed before Tuesday at 11:59PM, Arizona time, unless otherwise stated through our Facebook will be ready by Friday morning at the latest. Orders are often available Thursday evening though it is advised that you call ahead before traveling to pick up orders."; Store Policy is a convoluted mess that leaves you guessing when to place an order and when to expect the order. I have ordered and waited more than 10 business days in the past. Like the previous comment said before the store hides behind its policies and refuses to explain the change of their business model for its customers.
If you are ordering from this store be aware:
You are subject to lecture from an associate if ordering same day online (Tucson Location) and want to pick up the order. They will tell you condescendingly "our staff is pretty low right now and we might be able to fulfill your order", even when calling ahead (my quantity ordered was just two items). A&D makes it seem like it is a burden doing business with a customer. If you want my business there should be no questions asked when I already paid.
You have to order online during the first day of a business week to expect it a week later (most often to cards being located at different stores in the valley). You are charged for in store shipment and pickup of $1.00, when it should be free for inter-facilities transports (they literally have inventory to take with them to expos, magic cons, and other events within the country). Services should be free for pick up regardless.
In store orders at the POS Kiosks cannot be more than 50 items or else you get a talking to about times & fulfillment of orders. It disinterests them if you respond in kind, stating that you have already paid for the order and have a reason (gift, own birthday, or project) to request it be fulfilled. What's even more annoying is that there is no peace of mind for the customer to order in-store or online. You will either get lip service from staff in-store or late order online.
This Tucson Store front is more concerned with making a profit rather than improving the company in regards to shipping, in-store experience and interactions with the staff. The general concern by management is disingenuous and automated saying things like "I am sorry your experience was not what YOU expected. Tell us how to improve". This is only a front to make an attempt to cover up and keep PR traffic vetted, so that they can say "they are doing something about it". This is both online and in-store.
The up charge is quite significant for in-store items. Typically LGS's have to do this but the mark up is 30% over prices elsewhere. Be aware that their on line inventory systems are not accurate and will not have items available. The only positive is that your order will be refunded for a missing item.
In conclusion, it is safe to say that Amazing discoveries is a LGS that push profit before customers and shares haughty negative sentiments with their customers. Punitive responses should never be the answer nor be automated as a concern for...
Read moreFantastic store with wonderful customer service. I don't really game in store much but this is a good location when I do. Just download the MTG companion app, get the play code they provide, log in and there's no charge. They have a great online system for ordering cards from multiple locations for pick up in Tucson or other Phoenix valley locations or home delivery. My only complaint is that their MTG boosters (my game of choice) are a few dollars more than other local game shops. But, you can't beat them for their customer service and online single card selection.
UPDATE I would like to update this review because it has gotten so many views.
I am Disabled. Just making the 45-minute drive to get to a card shop is difficult so I have to bring my backpack with me everywhere I go because it contains emergency meds and supplies I need to function. I typically have a thumb brace on at least one hand because both thumbs need to be surgically repaired.
The employees at AD have never once hassled me for carrying my backpack into the store. Which is huge! (No, it is NOT reasonable to ask me to leave several thousand dollars of prescription medication that can't be replaced and medical devices in my car where they could be stolen.) This is a much bigger deal than many able-bodied people may realize.
Also, while they prefer that you use the computers that they have setup at the back of the store to place your order for individual cards I can state that the employees have ALWAYS been very helpful when I need someone to put an order together for me. I am not always able to use a keyboard with how my hands function and when I am able it typically causes me a lot of pain. I cannot even tell you how nice it is to know that I will get the assistance that I need every time I go to AD, even if it's a bit busy. They have a quality staff that remembers your face if you're a regular and they always seem genuinely happy to help. In my opinion, this customer service defrays any minor...
