Bigger picture is that they are an essential part of a terrific life hack. Here’s how it works: I like nice cars but spending $50-90k strikes me as insane. So when I need to buy a car, I let depreciation work for me by 1) identifying the exact, 8-10 year old car I want, 2) Saving a search on that model in an app like Autolist with a very low maximum mileage spec, 3) when it pops up, buying that rare unicorn of a car that someone bought but rarely drove, 4) finding a nearby certified independent mechanic who specializes in that brand to do maintenance and repairs at a rate comparable to other general mechanics.
