“I have decided to stick with LOVE. Hate is too great a burden to bear.” ~Martin Luther King There is something so powerful about explaining Dr. King’s tireless efforts for racial equality when you can physically walk his memorial in Washington, DC. Out of a mountain of despair, stands his stone of hope! Remembering his impact today and everyday! Have you seen his memorial before? #mlkday #martinlutherking #martinlutherkingjr #rememberingmlk

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is located in West Potomac Park next to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., United States.[1] It covers four acres and includes the Stone of Hope, a granite statue of Civil Rights Movement leader Martin Luther King carved by sculptor Lei Yixin. The inspiration for the memorial design is a line from King's "I Have A Dream" speech: "Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope." The memorial opened to the public on August 22, 2011, after more than two decades of planning, fund-raising, and construction.

This national memorial is the 395th unit in the United States National Park Service. The monumental memorial is located at the northwest corner of the Tidal Basin near the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, on a sightline linking the Lincoln Memorial to the northwest and the Jefferson Memorial to the southeast. The official address of the monument, 1964 Independence Avenue, S.W., commemorates the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

A ceremony dedicating the memorial was scheduled for Sunday, August 28, 2011, the 48th anniversary of the "I Have a Dream" speech that Martin Luther King Jr. delivered from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963[6] but was postponed until October 16 (the 16th anniversary of the 1995 Million Man March on the National Mall) due to Hurricane Irene.

Although this is not the first memorial to an African American in Washington, D.C., King is the first African American honored with a memorial on or near the National Mall and only the fourth non-President to be memorialized in such a way. The King Memorial is administered by the National Park Service (NPS).

Strongly suggest to visit if you are in...

This man, who was the face of the civil rights movement has the smallest memorial. I know he wasn't a president but his work shaped the trajectory of the lives of black and brown people in these un-united states. As I visited yesterday there were several school field trips going on. I saw a few students with maroon colored DC 2019 shirts from some academy 6 boys and 1 girl aged 13 -16yrs I shall not share ; but they were happily wearing Make America Great Hats bright red while visiting the monument. Their chaperones appeared not in the least bothered by these hats and went on business as usual. I thought it was either ignorance or just plain antagonist hate that wanted to bait opposition. Why would the parents of these children allow them to leave the house in such a climate as this. Instead of feeling hate for them I felt sorry that their parents who should be teaching them to be greater and do better have failed in teaching them to at least show respect while outside of their care. Back to the monument it is a beautiful depiction of him with walls of his quotes surrounded by a small pathway garden. You cannot see the monument from the street through the trees even though it sits right beyond them. Park by the ball field adjacent to the statue get an ice cream and meander through the tiny...
