Dangerously Delicious Pies serves sweet pies, savory pies, and quiche.
The outside of the restaurant looks almost like a tattoo parlor, which makes sense when you look at the logo, which is written in a common tattoo font with a skull and crossbones under an image of a pie. Inside the small restaurant, the menu hangs on the wall. Each flavor is listed on a separate mini-chalkboard, and the chalkboards are removed when the flavor sells out.
I tried two sweet pies:
Baltimore Bomb with Whipped Cream: Loaded with Berger Cookies (a Baltimore specialty) that melt down and swirl into a sweet vanilla cheese filling Cherry Crumb with Vanilla Ice Cream: Fresh, sour cherries with a crunchy topping of oats, brown sugar and butter
When I heard that the Baltimore Bomb was the top seller, I knew I had to have it. Berger cookies are cake-like cookies with a thick, fudge icing. When baked into the warm, buttery pie crust, they became soft, rich, and fluffy. The whipped cream was a perfect complement, but I wish I had more, because it melted quickly on the warm slice of pie.
I also sampled the Cherry Crumb with vanilla ice cream. The crumble on top was a highlight, and the vanilla ice cream balanced out the sour cherries perfectly. These three ingredients made for an extremely flavorful – and dare I say dangerously delicious – slice of pie.
Verdict
At $7 a slice (if you include ice cream or whipped cream), these pies were totally worth it. I would hit up this spot again in a second next time I’m in DC, for more sweet pies, as well as savory. BBQ Pork and Steak Mushroom Onion Gruyere...
Read moreI recently visited the Pie Shop and had mixed feelings about my experience. On the positive side, the pie itself was excellent, perfectly baked, flavorful, and clearly made with care. It was the kind of dessert that made me want to come back just for the taste alone. The employees were also very nice and welcoming. They greeted us warmly, answered our questions with a smile, and seemed genuinely proud of what they were serving. The interior was visually appealing and matched the cozy charm you would expect from a pie shop. The décor, lighting, and arrangement of tables created an inviting look, making it seem like a perfect spot to relax over dessert.
However, as much as I appreciated the quality of the food and friendliness of the staff, I could not ignore the atmosphere outside of the immediate dining area. Unfortunately, it did not feel entirely safe or comfortable. There was an unsettling vibe that made me a little cautious during my visit, and this strongly impacted my overall impression. A great pie shop should not only serve delicious food but also provide a sense of relaxation and security for its customers. If the safety concern were addressed, this place could easily become a favorite spot. As it stands, it is worth visiting for the pie, but I recommend being mindful of the...
Read moreSame as posted on Yelp: I have been coming to this location for the better part of 7-8 years and since getting larger... Quality and service is declining.
Sweet pie slices are getting smaller.. and prices have only gone up. Baltimore location still has 2 for $22 date night deal while this one now charges $28!! It's $30 for a whole sweet pie in Baltimore.. $33 here so HOW IS THAT A DATE NIGHT DEAL?! It's not anymore! MD locations Savory pies are $35.. $37 in DC You get the point.
There used to be an even amount of sweet and savory to pick from.. now it's about 75% sweet and 25% savory. So, quality has been slipping for years. Too many sweet options probably 20 or so. Smaller menu before led to better quality in my opinion.
They're resting upon their laurels of having been in the location since before the gentrification of H Street.
How to fix it: Bring the slices back down to $5-6 each. AFFORDABLE. Match the prices of MD locations (Theyre all under the same LLC still apparently) Downsize the menu so there's an even amount to pick from, less ingredients, quality ingredients. Quit being greedy!
I miss the days when you could sit down like it was a pie bar with the display staring you in the face. Mismatched plates. And $2 for $22 REAL date...
