So here's the skinny on The Studio Theatre Acting classes:
Latecomers: It's in the busy part of 14th street and most classes are during rush hour. There is only street parking, so you will most likely be in traffic or circling the block to find parking.
What Refund?: The refund policy is garbage. You can only cancel before your class starts or 3 days after the 1st class. In my case, the teacher started cancelling classes and we had substitute teachers around the 3rd class - bait & switch - no refund now. 😠
Watch your Wallet: The classes are expensive in the area. Like over $500 for a class where you are doing pantomimes EVERY DAY!
The Hustle: You can't just sign up for the class you want to take yo further your acting experience. Oh no! You have to take their classes in order because they have assigned prerequisites for EVERY class. Sorry Julia Roberts, you too would have to take Principles of Realism too. It's part of the hustle to get you to spend thousands of dollars before you can take the class you want.
No one cares: I requested a refund do to the multiple changes in my class teacher. The guy who runs the conservatory would rather walk through hell in gasoline underpants than give any student their money back for being dissatisfied with the quality of their purchase. I've sent over 15 emails just asking to apply a credit for me to take the class next session. No dice. Nadda. No responses. And I emailed EVERYONE! (Maybe I should email a lawyer or Consumer Protection next)
Bottom line: Save your coins. Go to The Theatre Lab. I felt more welcomed and less...
Read moreWe're lucky in DC to have so many good theaters. Studio was renovated a few years ago and has several stages available at once for plays. Most of them have seats that wrap maybe two-thirds around the stages. The stages are pretty small, but large enough to be effective.
A lot of the plays here have small casts, maybe just three people, and they're almost all modern plays by new, respected playwrights, and the plays aren't so ... experimental as you might see elsewhere. The actors are quite talented and the plays are almost always very good. There is an occasional rare clunker, but season tickets are...
Read moreThe Studio Theater offers excellent theater. We have been season subscribers for several years. This past week, January 23, I have called the box office several times each day. After being told to push "0" to talk with an associate, nothing happens, the message is repeated and again nothing happens. Then the message "Thank you for calling" and the line goes dead. I can't believe there's always such a high volume of calls. If there's no intention to answer the phone, the correct box hours should be posted. I don't like to write such messages, but how else does one communicate in today's...
