Great park! I love the location. It is a very easy walk from the Trax station (¼ mile). The park itself covers about 100 acres. As of this writing there are 4 different playgrounds. There is actually a 5th currently under construction. When it is finished it will dwarf the size of the other 4. It looks like a lot of fun (I posted photos of the construction area behind the fence).
As you would imagine, in addition to the playgrounds, there are tennis courts, basketball courts, and several baseball diamonds. There are picnic tables, covered pavilions (with tables), drinking fountains, restrooms, and doggy clean-up stations at various locations throughout the park. Some of the larger pavilions can be reserved for special occasions. Phone numbers for reservations are posted at each pavilion.
There is a lot of wide open space with a lot of mature trees for shade. There is also a Veteran Memorial in the center of the park with flags, plaques and water features. Just across from the memorial are several historic buildings and vehicles that were a lot of fun to learn about. All in all it is the perfect place to spend the day with the family.
As I mentioned above, there is currently a larger playground under construction near the east end of the park. Toward the West end there is a recreation center. The rec center has its own outdoor playground for smaller kids as well as baseball diamonds. Inside the rec center there are a couple swimming pools under construction that should be finished before the end of the year. I'm not sure if the rec center itself is open yet. You'll have to do a little sleuthing of your own to determine that one. Go have fun and...
Read moreThank you so much for overflow tent sites! I arrived in the park around 5pm and campgrounds were at full capacity. There were signs posted on the entrance at the bottom of the hill all the way to the registration booth that camp was full. I still wouldn't take it for an answer. I met Ranger Tim who laughed at my question whether there was any chance that the signs weren't for real. He showed me a crazy area where he puts families that arrive real late looking for a no frills spot (it's the same price $30 without a picnic table or fire ring but includes use of amenities). The overflow tent site looks so creepy at first, but welcomingly quiet. Another family showed up after dark and pitched a tent next to mine. What a relief. The next day, I had a pick of the best spot to spend my second night. The park's location is a close drive to downtown Monterey, Pacific Grove coast, Carmel by the sea and then back. The ranger removes all site tags before eleven in the morning. This place has a huge play structure for children in the center of the campgrounds. FYI, there is a Hikers/Bikers section. It looks like an overflow tent site because it didn't have tables or fire rings. If you see a homeless looking person, you're probably...
