C&O Canal Lock — Attraction in Williamsport

Awesome trail for a family fun hiking trip. Beautiful picturesque view of nature as you embrace on the adventurous of human nature. The great out doors has so much to offer. As you hike along the C&O Canal, there are plenty of information boards posted up and down the Canal for little quick history lessons on the C&O Canal. Nuggets of information and or just glance at how people use to live and why the C&O Canal was vital when it was used.

The C&O Canal, Appalachian trail and Potomac trail all meet up or cross each other in Harper's Ferry. That was neat being on all of those trails at one time. Google is great for searching for things and places to visit. However, seeing it on the internet versus seeing it with your own eyes is almost incomparable. The Cushwa Basin in historic Williamsport along the C&O canal is a great place to relax, walk or ride your bike along the C&O canal, and has a boat launch into the Potomac river.

We walked a few miles here with our dog learning about the history of the area and enjoying the naturalistic settings. The canal path is well take care of and graded better here than other sections like Dam 5. There are several spots to fish in the canal, creek or river banks. I have seen an abundance of wildlife around this section from hawks nesting, deer, turtles, groundhog and beaver. There is a large field with soccer goals near the boat launch and park with tables, trash cans and port a pottys for additional activities.

If you follow directions according to these Google directions it will take you to the wrong entrance. It will take you down and no outlet Street. I am literally watching someone turn around right now because they were led to the wrong entrance. The entrance is about 500 feet on another street.
