This bridge is such a wonderful piece of history. It is preserved and open for exploring in the city park. It's amazing to see the timbers used in building this bridge. I can't imagine how they were able to move it to the park, but I'm glad they figured it out. It's truly lovely and we visited on an early spring day with lots of wind, but it was more than worth a messy hair day to walk on this bridge and get to see it up close. I enjoyed visiting the bridge and learning about the history of each one.

Visiting "The Covered Bridges Of Madison County," Winterset, Iowa was an enjoyable experience. It's great to see the beautiful craftsmanship of 19th Century bridges in the heart of Iowa. It only takes about two hours to visit every covered bridge.....why not, there all close by. Unfortunately, a few years ago, one of the bridges was destroyed buy an arsonist (Cedar Bridge). While you're in the area swing by the lovely town of Winterset, Iowa (John Wayne's Birthplace).

Constructed in 1870 by Eli Cox, this 79 foot long timber town lattice truss covered bridge is the second oldest of the six surviving in Madison County. Originally traversing the North River, in 1979 it was moved to its present location inside Winterset City Park. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. There is ample parking, and access to the park is paved.

Donahue covered bridge review for google maps-5 stars

This bridge is insane! It stretches over a fissure 42 feet deep filled with the counties medical waste, Broken glass, and fingernail clippings. Add to that, local delinquents(the sour patch kids), have been dumping their leftover lemon juice in the chasm and you have a painful If not deadly consequence. But consequence to what? The bridge may look like your typical Madison County covered sort. But if you enter, you’ll soon find parts of the floor are made of the Styrofoam trays used to package meat, but painted and carved to appear as ancient lumber. If you were lucky enough to find solid purchase as you cross, beware the fireman axes. They appear to be hastily rigged to release and swing down from the rafters should you grab the wrong hand hold. There were other death traps further inside that I couldn’t see, but I could hear the screams. So why would anyone create such an exhibition designed for human suffering? 20 years ago, I would have thought it the shrine to the Home Alone movie series. But to you, reader, it is plain as the WASP’ie nose on your...
