If you are interested in art, skilled handcraftsmanship, geometry, or quilting, this venue should be considered when you are in the area. My wife and I stopped here yesterday for a brief visit after finding ample parking near the entrance of the museum, which is located within a former JC Penny department store. The rotating exhibit we saw was a collection of more than 20 full size mattress handmade indigo and white colored exquisitely crafted quilts created in Michigan around 1870 in Michigan. In a mezzanine level, there were several antique sewing machines from popular worldwide American and European companies and a single small doll house. The veteran and senior citizen cost of admission was $10.

This was such a cute place to stop by! I saw a sign off of the highway while on a road trip with my Aunt who is an avid crafter, and I knew she would appreciate seeing the museum. It was a quiet and small building, which was nice since my aunt doesn't get around walking very well and she enjoyed the chairs at every display corner so we could rest while enjoying the beautiful quilt details. You could spend ten minutes or an hour (more if you're into quilting!) here easily. The ladies working were kind and knowledgeable. I even got a postcard for my collection! Their gift shop has a variety of items you won't want to miss. They advertise the annual quilt event that we may visit for next summer!

Even if you're not a quilt person you should visit this museum. Although they have older artifacts, you need to see the changes to today's quilts. These are really works of art. The displays change out. All the works when we visited were part of the modern quilt movement. Not your grandma's quilt.

Stopped on the way across I-80 after we saw the sign at the exit! It's a 15 minute drive but SO worth it! As of this posting, my wife has all the pics.. but I was really wowed! Plus they also have a guild that does Military "Quilts of valor" . The staff were more than friendly and hospitable, explaining and answering all our questions. It sits in the town square and parking is readily available. The town itself seems to take you back to when life was simpler. There is a small fee to go through it, which helps them keep the lights on.. less than $10 per adult. As a bonus... it's only one or two streets away from the John Wayne birthplace, where they do tours there, through the spring/summer months. If you like to sew or know someone who does I HIGHLY recommend...
