Petite Cafe — Restaurant in Winterset

Winterset has long needed a good coffee shop, and I've tried it several times since it first opened, each time hoping it would have improved. They have only ever offered oat milk or half&half for the their milk choices. While I understand some people prefer oat milk, I just don't at all unless it's in the just the right drink. Some days I really just want a regular vanilla latte. Something so basic really should be an option at any coffee shop. Also, as someone who lives in Winterset and has a commute, I have to be out the door by 7:30am. Petite Cafe does not open until 8am, which makes going there during the week not an option. This week, I noticed on their social media that they were offering a new drink "BOGO all week long". That was on Monday. I couldn't make it during the week because of their hours, so today (Saturday) I checked again before I went to make sure it was truly "all week long" and saw two posts confirming it. When I arrived and tried to order the special buy-one-get-one, the cashier informed me "we aren't doing that anymore." Frustrated, I bought the drink and left. Between the hours, the milk choices, the poor customer service, I am left not feeling like trying it again. Which is disappointing! Coffee shops should make you feel welcome, like you are part of the community, and I have only ever felt like I was a problem for wanting regular milk and needed educated. UPDATE: My husband and I returned this summer and they now have regular milk options. Service was better and our drinks were great!

I used to LOVE stopping in when we came home to visit.

Today I stopped in and ordered a plain latte with milk. They told me that they don’t have dairy milk only oat milk. First off, latte means milk in Italian, and second it is a common staple for a coffee shop. I used to order my coffees there with milk, so I don’t know what happened. I then ordered an espresso on ice with a splash of half and half because that was their only dairy product, and the closest thing I could get to a strong coffee that wasn’t black. I was given an almost white drink. After walking out and taking a few sips I could tell something was not right, let alone the drink looking like there was no espresso. Disappointed upon leaving, my husband took my drink in to ask for it to be remade. Upon this request he was told it was as filled with oat milk and half and half because the “half and half would be too much.” First off, I asked for a splash of half and half, and expressed when ordering that I did NOT want oat milk. She then weirdly proceeded to try and sell my husband on their oat milk (califia farms) and why they made my coffee that way despite it not being what I ordered. First time but won't be the last. The name is appropriate - it is indeed petite! Seating for 10. Simple but very nice menu.

Had the avocado toast and a latte for $12. Completely obsessed with how good the toast was! So good.

Quick service. Order/pick up at the counter. Several people came in during my visit and everything ran smooth.

Nice & clean with plants around and pretty wall murals. Local coffee for sale.

Variety of fresh pastries available as well. Open breakfast through lunch only. Beautiful view of the courthouse and table for 2 outside...
