## **Wimbledon Park ** Wimbledon Park is a 27-hectare (67-acre) urban park located in the Wimbledon area of London, which also serves as the name for the suburban area surrounding Wimbledon Park Underground station. This park is distinct from Wimbledon Common, which is situated on higher ground to the west. ## **Historical Background** Wimbledon Park was originally part of the Manor of Wimbledon and was landscaped by Capability Brown in the 18th century. During this period, a dam was constructed on a stream that flowed from springs near Wimbledon Common to the River Wandle at Earlsfield, creating the current lake. In the 19th century, it served as one of the residences of the Spencer family, until the 4th Earl Spencer sold the estate to property developer John Augustus Beaumont in 1846. The current park was purchased by Wimbledon Borough just before World War I and was added to the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens by English Heritage (now Historic England) in 1987. ## **Ownership Structure** The management of Wimbledon Park involves a complex structure with three different organizations owning portions of the land: - **Merton Council**: Owns the public park and lake - **All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC)**: Owns the golf course land and has taken over the lease previously held by Wimbledon Park Golf Club - **Wimbledon Club**: Owns and occupies land to the west of the lake ## **Facilities and Features** Wimbledon Park offers various recreational facilities: - Water sports including sailing, kayaking, and canoeing on the large lake - Athletics track with a 400m circuit - Tennis courts - Bowling pavilion - Beach volleyball courts - Water sports and outdoor activity center At the northern edge of the park lies Horse Close Wood, a small ancient woodland primarily composed of ash and oak trees. In 2007, a new children's water play area called Elizabeth's Pool was opened, named in honor of a local child. ## **Current Activities and Plans** Each November, Merton Council hosts a large fireworks display at Wimbledon Park, which is one of London's largest and most popular events. Merton Council has developed the Wimbledon Park Masterplan, presenting a long-term vision for the next 25 years to guide decision-making and future investments. During the 2025 Wimbledon Championships (June 30 - July 13), free viewing events with large screens are being held in partnership with the All England Lawn Tennis Club at various locations including Wandle Park.

Wimbledon Queue and Grounds Pass Information at Wimbledon Park (2024) The waiting area for non-ticket holders at Wimbledon is well-organized, there is also a tent area for those who will sleep over to be early in the line for last minute tickets on the following day. However, clear signage regarding the ticket purchasing process is lacking. Stewards on-site can provide information about ground passes, which grant access to all courts except Center and No. 1. These passes cost £20, but if you arrive after 5 PM, they may be discounted to £10. Keep in mind that queues might be shorter or non-existent later in the day. If you arrive after 7 PM, securing a ground pass becomes less likely. Nevertheless, there are still opportunities to enjoy the Wimbledon atmosphere, including iconic photo spots and even the chance to vote for the potential men's final winner. Please note: This information is based on previous years and may change.

This park is very popular indeed. There's a fair sized pavilion which makes a welco.e cafeteria.I had an enormous pizza and really good tasting chips. We have a choice between sitting inside or under shelter outside. It's next to a few public tennis courts, so that we can fool people that we've seen tennis at Wimbledon ! It's such a lovely, large and well kept park, with a happy atmosphere. There is a very large area of plain grass to play or picnic on. There's a beautiful lake with many water fowl, and a nearby children's playground with very small public toilets close by. It's easy to walk there from the District Line Wimbledon Park underground station, or Southfields, a slightly longer walk. There is a car park, but I don't know about fees.

A small pretty park, great for children. Went there last week, unfortunately part of the walkway around the lake and the waterfall gardens was closed but we still had fun 😄. Went around 3 and the childrens park was busy but bearable. Lovely in the sun combined with an ice cream from the little shop. The tennis club along with people having picnics on the grassy area just creates a lovely, active atmosphere. The ducks and swans in the lake are so friendly too, they kept coming up to the boardwalk, however just be aware this may scare younger children, or your child may scare the animals if they chase them around. Parking spaces is limited but parking is free. Two main entrances and free public toilets featured.

A beautiful park in Wimbledon! It's huge with a playground, cafe, volleyball courts, children's play area, lawn tennis courts, mini golf and rose walks. It has a big lake on one side with ducks and swans in it. The views of this lake and the surroundings are amazing. On a good summer day, people come in big groups and barbeque along the playground. It's a good place to walk your dog as well. This park borders the all too famous tennis courts of Wimbledon. Taking the tube to Wimbledon park station and a short 10 minute walk brings you to one end of the park. There are toilets located at this end near the children's play area. The rose walk along the volleyball and golf areas is well maintained and beautiful.
