We had a 1 week stay at the Argus Hotel and we couldn't be happier. We got exactly what was advertised. A modern twin room with a bath. The air-conditioning was great and our small balcony was great to step out on, watch thunderstorms and enjoy that blistering Darwin heat for a short period of time. We were on the 5th floor, so we had a great view of the city and the water. They actually supply Maccona coffee, not International Roast (which as a coffee drinker, my Mum was happy with) in the rooms. Rooms are cleaned daily and tea and coffee are replenished daily in your room. The hotel is conveniently located, Woolworths is just around the corner and the whole city is within walking distance. Breakfast was adequate and the breakfast staff were very friendly. We didn't try the pool (we didn't have time) but other guests raved about it. Reception has plenty of seats so that you can wait in air-conditioned comfort if you are waiting for a tour bus. The staff were super friendly and accommodating and reception is open 24/7.
Our holiday was fantastic, right up until Virgin cancelled our flight home on the morning of said flight and told us that they had no options to help us get home. We immediately extended our stay for that night. Queue a day of organising a way home, which was only viable a week later when flights wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. After arranging our flights, we booked another weeks accommodation. The hotel assured us we could stay in our room and brought us a microwave so that we wouldn't have to eat out for every dinner over the next week. At the end of the day Virgin informed us that we had a flight the next day. We got a full refund for the week we had just organised to stay. The staff were very understanding and accommodating. We got the deposit (which we paid in cash) back upon checking out and they called us a cab so we could get to...
Read moreI recently stayed at the Argus Hotel in Darwin and I was very disappointed. To get to the 9th floor, you first have to send the lift that only services the 8th floor to the basement, before you can get into the lift that services the 9th floor. Once we finally got to the 9th floor, we were overpowered by a strong, stale odour of curry food that reeked into our room. First we thought it was a cleaning issue, but no, it was our neighbour cooking every night in his room. The constant smell of stale curry was sickening. Unfortunately we couldn't let fresh air into the room, as the balcony door was heavy and wouldn't stay open. The fittings in our room were all old and worn. The desk lamp had one of those energy saving curly light globes from the 90s, and the air-conditioning remote control was temperamental and difficult to operate. The bathroom fittings were in a sorry state. The towel rack was not only loose, it was located above the toilet seat, and could fall on your head at any moment. I found the shower screen very concerning, as it also was attached poorly, and the bathroom door handle was loose and in need of attention. I reported the main issues with the bathroom and smell to the staff, the second time I insisted that my complaint be recorded on their system. This was meant to be a relaxing time, enjoyable time for my husband and myself and it wasn't. We couldn't get away from this hotel fast enough and I will never return to that...
Read moreA nice clean modern and friendly hotel with a complementary breakfast.
The breakfast room is also a Thai Indian restaurant (separate review) on the mezzanine floor near reception.
It has a pool and spa, strangely situated adjacent to the restaurant so one needs to move through it to get to both pool and spa. Quite odd!
The pricing is very affordable and offers a very nice room for the price.
We opted for the king bed room for $91.
We nearly always book directly through the hotel which in this case saved us $20 off the ‘special’ price offered by the booking agencies which are mostly based in Europe anyway (mostly the Netherlands)
A nice, well run, clean hotel at a very reasonable price. (In December anyway)
Having now stayed overnight I feel for completeness I should add a couple of things. Although the rooms are clean and modern, it has been designed to a price (which is no criticism) but the noise does carry. Doors opening and closing during the night are very loud and if you are a light sleeper it may effect you. The kettle is loud, the shower is loud. There are two green lights on the phone which illuminate the room with a alien green glow.
And a last point about the shower, if you are a large (ish) person you will find the shower recess over the bath very narrow-I did and I’m not large. Of course this may have been unique to my room but I doubt it.
Would we return, absolutely, for the money it’s a great room, not...
