We stayed at the Jaz in the City.
The hotel is nicely kept and well appointed. The staff was considerate and friendly. We have no complaints in those regards.
Where we do have the issue is with the failure of the room’ environmental control systems…most specifically the inability to cool the room to a comfortable level.
We arrived late on and proceeded to the room. It was uncomfortably hot, so we opened the window and turned the thermostat down to its lowest setting of -3 degrees (the system is based off of the 21.5 degrees Celsius we were later informed is the base temperature of the system). Thus it should have been capable of 18.5 C in the room. It did not cool down.
The room was just OK with the window open but the street noise was overwhelming, so we asked the front desk to move us. At this time we were told that if the window was open the cooling system would not work. He checked his SMART system at the front desk and our room showed 23.5 C which is very warm. We went back to the room, closed the window and the system kicked on…we set the fan to high. It never did cool down but the fan moving the air around the room made it moderately tolerable. As it was after midnight when this was happening, we were anxious to get to sleep.
The second night proved not to be the case. We arrived back at the room after a day of sightseeing and it was stifling hot. We again set the temp down to -3 degrees and hoped it would cool down, but it never did. It remained oppressively hot with temperatures measured on my phone and watch at 25.6 degrees! We never got any sleep the second night, but as we had to leave at 5am for a flight, we literally sweated it out.
In talking to the desk person at checkout, we discussed this issue at length and he confirmed it still showed 23.5 C on his system, which shows it was not working correctly, as the two temps taken by my phone and watch in the room itself showed 25.6 C. He said it should have been down below twenty and that he would have it looked into. Unfortunately that did nothing for us. We left the hotel in the early morning for a 20 hour trip home with essentially no sleep since the previous evening. To say it made the travel unpleasant is an understatement.
As the sole purpose for a hotel is to provide a comfortable night’s sleep, we definitely feel that we did not receive the services paid for. Therefore we requested after we got home that we be credited for at least the one night. Hotels.com did a good of following up, but all they got from management was that refunds were against the hotel’s policy.
Fair enough…that enacts my policy of leaving this review wherever I can, which I can only think will cost them far more than the one night. Strange management decision but it is their prerogative. You might thing a 1 star rating is extreme, but what do you really rent a hotel room for? To sleep!
If you do book here, check your heating/cooling and make sure it can keep you comfortable. If it does not react as you expect, go stand in front of them and demand another room immediately. Don’t listen to their...

Read moreCurrently staying in this hotel, hotel is modern and rooms are as well.
There are no tables and seats in the room so if this is an important factor please reconsider.
Unfortunately, the service is ABYSMAL and the staff are likely racist.
Some incidents.
Room booking was missing and it took awhile for them to find the booking. The lady who sorted it out was nice and apologetic so all good on that front.
Bar staff refused to service asian guests for some reason, a lady served all the other guests who arrived after us at the bar even though we were patiently waiting. The vibe was just disappointing as another guy also only served us reluctantly after serving the rest.
There are two new year parties happening at the same time in the hotel so it's really crowded and noisy. The music can be heard really loudly from the floors so if you are someone who can't deal with earplugs (which they provided as a mitigation factor), it sucks as the party will go on to the wee hours in the morning.
Went down to request for some cutlery and thought it would save the staff's some time as they are likely to be busy on NYE. However, upon checking with the receptionist, he rudely pointed out he's the reception and I should ask the bar. Honestly baffled as I thought the reception should be the first point of contact for hotel services.
It was supposed to be a honeymoon trip but unfortunately the rudeness of the staff is a huge turn off and I would not stay at the hotel again if I...
