We made a reservation at the Klimop on August 5th by phone for Saturday, 23 August at noon for the 90th birthday celebration of my mother. Updated the reservation 2 weeks later to update the number of people. On both occasions, the reservation was confirmed, no mention of the restaurant being closed for lunch on Saturdays.
On August 23rd, we picked up my mother from her care home, other guests took the train or cycled to the location. Upon arrival, one of the guests told me the restaurant was closed. A lady from the Klimop came to talk to us, called her manager: no sign of a reservation. The location is only open for hotel guests (who we could see having lunch inside).
My mother had to sit down. It was hot. We had to quickly improvise while the Klimop lady was trying to see whose fault it was, trying to blame us for the error. Yes, it was probably on the website, but someone at the Klimop took our reservation TWICE.
I asked simply: I don't care about all the liability & guilt bla bla bla, today is my mother's birthday, can you can serve us or not?? "No". Ok then.
We went to ask the first restaurant next door who were super friendly and made us very welcome, even without reservations, a group of 8, short on kitchen staff. We had a lovely time. Thank you to La Royale : you saved the day! The food & service were great! See you again next year,...
Read moreWe stopped here with an hour to spare before our train, we speak little Dutch but do try, our menu was in English which was a good start, but the manager’s approach to insisting that, as we only ordered one main and a side (the main was for my husband and the side for me as I wasn’t too hungry) we would be charged a sharing fee. ||I later clarified we wouldn’t be sharing and the fee was revoked but it made us awfully uncomfortable. It was also a very very hot day and we asked for tap water, we were told there was none available and to pay for (expensive) bottled water - we’re both students travelling on a budget so we ended up waiting until after leaving to drink.||||We got our (oily) food to take out but weren’t offered a bag or cutlery, the food’s oil leaked over everything in our bag as oil does.||||Overall we would never return. ||||It is a nice building from the...
Read moreStayed here over Easter with my Lass June, whilst using the hotel as a base for a tour of Belgian Breweries. Very friendly and helpful staff, always with a smile....The breakfast buffet choice was excellent.....Hotel overall a bit old fashioned but only one minor point to complain about.....When tried to close the curtain in our room, we realised that there actually was only half a curtain. On bringing this to the attention of the reception, we were given a duvet cover to put up as the hotel was full and there were no other rooms.....This duvet cover in being white did not compensate for the lack of half a curtain...We complained about this when we arrived and we stayed for four nights....Nothing was done about the problem.....If we had had another half curtain I would have given 5 stars to this review.....but enjoyed staying with you....Thanks...
