Checkout is at 10:30 am. And hellishly run...
Checked-in for one night in as a walk in. Paid 7 USD. Plus 1 USD for towel.
It’s a French place as she (the owner says). Owner is western French. Wife is I think Cambodian but speaks fluent French also.
Basic amenities. Ie no shower soap or shampoo or towel.
Woke up and packed and made my coffee by 9am. Was told to remove my bag as checkin is at 10:30am. I optionally as per her (owner) could store it behind the desk.
I sat at the desk lobby, had my coffee and read. As we all know Cambodian heat is hot even at 10:30am. I turned in the fan and it kept turning off. I asked her is it possible to leave the fan on. She said no because I checked out at 10:30 so I have to leave. And I don’t speak French so she can’t help me and she doesn’t speak English-which is a lie. I’ve been speaking to her in English easily since checking in.
I think she has a mental disorder, possibly manic depressive. Always shouting in French about something. Doing something odd like, picking up the cat and asking the customer to take care of it for a week then rushing off only to return later. You can hear her talking wherever you are. I think she wants to be seen, heard, and noticed.
As being polite and very well mannered as possible it’s hard to deal with someone.
I think possible narcystic psychopathic manic, so they’re constantly trying to trigger and annoy you (ie constantly turning off the fan, I don’t speak English, but she knows we’ve been communicating in English— gaslighting).
Finally I told her fine I’ll leave as I have to leave and go- as per her as I checked out at 10:30. It was now 11am at this point. I had to eat anyways. So I left and she said hope you don’t come back—in perfect English. And yes our entire conversation was in English…
…and yes while reading she turned off the fan… a fan… 3 times because she wanted to save the fan electricity.
…and yes to support her reasons I checked out so I should leave. Kicked out because she didn’t want me to use a bit of electricity.
If you want to avoid feel utterly annoyed with an “Asian” mother always barking with clearly some mental syndrome combination of terrible sorts— unable to peacefully enjoy your morning coffee and read or any quiet time— I’d...
Read moreThese hosts fall way short of this hostel's potential. I've been around the block as far as homestays, hostels, hotels. You can immediately feel and understand when a host actually cares about people's comfort. They present you with a clean bed and that's about it. I'm honestly not sure why this place has a high rating...I was greeted quite poorly and there was never a sense of warmth. I asked a few questions politely. For example "could you recommend any local food spots in this neighborhood?" I basically got this: "left, left blah blah blah". I thought she was joking. This is rule #1 when operating a hostel/homestay...you need to be warm and welcoming...i was sitting and having dinner at one of the tables the 2nd night and the host says to me "hey, you need to move...that's my husband's spot"...Seriously? hmmm i have nothing to say about that...also they spoke French under the breath, im sure they were saying something unreasonable...get this? there are 2 fans in the common area. one above their office and one above the kitchen area...it's literally 36 C out and they can't at least put a few standing fans around? come on guys...get real. the bathroom was down to no soap...you can't be doing that...the host was talking as loud as can be at 6:30/7AM without any consideration for the folks sleeping...i noticed several of the guests spoke French so perhaps they found a niche...please don't spend money on this place until they get their act together. When you can't provide any value-added services, it's time to rethink your purpose for running a hostel/homestay...the breakfast is expensive...they were turning off the AC in the dorm room at like 7am :O are you kidding me? this is Cambodia in May. once again, it's sad cause they have the potential...do yourself a favor and find somewhere...

I stayed in the 8-bed dorm. The bunk was clean and comfortable. Curtain for privacy. An outlet but NO shelf and NO light and NO hangers/hooks - all would be great for guests. A large locker underneath the bunk. Nice courtyard with a place to set up your laptop. Cats and a dog running around - the dog did snap at another guest and a few reviews mention that as well, so keep that in mind. $4 breakfast is available - pancake or toast and omelette with watermelon and either banana or pineapple sporadically. Nice to have breakfast onsite but I'd check out other options before committing. Plenty of hot water. Large bathroom. Wifi was fairly spotty.
Walking distance to the Tuol Sleng Genocide museum and the Olympic stadium (15 minutes). Plenty of restaurants and shops and some bars around - including one across the street that plays music until midnight or so. But the neighborhood isn't that interesting otherwise - specifically, it lacks any kind of park where you can just sit outside out of the sun.
Charged me a slightly higher rate in-person than was listed on Booking.
EDIT: in response to the owner's response
What a weirdly aggressive reply to my review - which tells you something about the owner. I said the place was fine.
What more I'd like was clearly stated in my review: a shelf in the bunk, a light in the bunk, and hooks in the bunk.
I've stayed in a lot of hostels for around the same money, and plenty of them have the above.
Perhaps listening to your customers would help improve the customer experience at...
