Quick review: a relatively pricey (for the room we got) and subpar hotel with dismal customer service. Although the room was a clean, the heat along with the bedding, was unbearable and really ruined the entire stay. It is conveniently located and has underground parking but other than that I would not recommend it and you should save your money.
On Thursday March 16th my boyfriend and I booked a night in at the King Edward Hotel in Banff and it was a subpar experience to say the least. We got into an accident earlier that day and our car had to be in the repair shop the next day hence why we made the hotel booking the day of. While on the phone I spoke with a gentleman and he informed me that there was a king sized room available for $85.00, I relayed the information to my boyfriend and he said to book it. Within those 10 seconds of relaying that information, the gentleman on the other end said “Oh sorry. Looks like someone booked it. Yeah sorry about that.” I was pretty upset by that considering he had just told me there was a booking available (I am not sure why he did not click on that booking to hold it in place so someone else would not take it).
I had to prompt him to be more helpful and asked “well okay what are my next options?” to which he said there was a four person room available for $165.00. This was obviously a huge price difference from the other option and he said the best he could do was give me the room for $119.00. My boyfriend and I were desperate and just agreed to the price but it was the worst choice we made for the following MAIN reasons
-A four person room does not imply the room will be bigger. You will get a “king size” bed (take this with a grain of salt) and an old brown pull out sofa.
-The wifi is not high speed. It is more like “connect whenever it feels like it speed.” This was more annoying and frustrating than anything.
-The sheets are really scratchy. I am not expecting 600 count Egyptian cotton but it would have been nice to turn in your bed without scratching your elbows. On top of that the pillows are really really lumpy and hard.
The main overhead light with the fan does not work. Bored front desk girl did not want to make the trek upstairs to help us since she was too busy googling ways to kill time at work. We just had to make do with the 2 side stand lights but having the fan working would have been ideal.
Now for the real icing on top. THE ROOM IS BOILING HOT. THE THERMOSTAT DOES NOT WORK IT JUST MAKES A WEIRD HISSING SOUND. It was so hot in the room that the little bottle of coconut oil I had melted overnight. Now you could open the window, but then you would hear a barrage of hollers and yells and laughs from drunk tourists until 1 am at night. Once those noises died down you were lulled to sleep by the clashing of drums and guitars (what I must assume is this bars version of live music) coming from down the street. Eventually you will be so exhausted that the mixture of drunk tourists, live music and ‘My 600 LB Life’ will lull you to a restless and pretty crappy sleep.
$143.00 later (including the $5.00 underground parking fee) and we were better off adding a $100 extra and staying in a hotel room that had excellent service and a comfy room that was not boiling hot (which honestly was the worst part. I could have handled everything but the lack of proper ventilation leading to a terrible sleep really ruined my entire experience).
If you can handle subpar experience, scratchy sheets, a boiling hot room and amenities that do not work all for an unreasonable price then the King Edwards Hotel is for you. Keep in mind I wasn’t expecting the Fairmont but I did have reasonable standards that this hotel...
Read moreUnfortunately had to make a late booking and ended up with the only available spot. Unfortunately had a bad experience. The main street is noisy at night. The Mount Royal hotel across the road is under repair from a recent fire. Lots of industrial sounding noises ensure an early rise. This is one of the, if not the cheapest hotels. You only have to imagine the clientèle it attracts. Expect noisy late night party goers returning at 2 and 3 and 4 am. The older infrastructure needs an update. Sexy times can be heard thru the walls when the street sounds die down. The elevator is hit and miss; the reception does not recommend using it. Being on the 3rd floor only requires a brisk run up the stairs to the 2nd floor, a slight detour via the 2nd floor hall and then further up a separate set of stairs. To me it is important that a place is clean and safe and reliable. You cannot expect new firm beds or modern infrastructure at these prices; one might hope for some quaint Quasi-Victorian hints or heritage or ambiance. Unfortunately its actually just an older place that serves a super cheap accommodation to drop your head into when you've had too much to drink. Location: great. Cleanliness: okay(Some old pizza against the wall. Bedding was clean). Bed: worn out, uncomfortable. Noise: enough to disrupt your sleep. Service: this is not a serviced hotel. Value: fair. Overall:...
Read moreI would highly advise against staying here. We arrived at the hotel during a heat wave to a printed sign on the door saying that there is NO AIR CONDITIONING. We thoroughly checked the website and reservation confirmation email to see if we missed this somewhere but it is not listed. We had a horrible sleep at night, couldn’t open windows because it is on a noisy street and the fans just blew hot dry air around the room. We waited 6 hours to speak with the manager. He finally met with us at 11pm at night and told us to find somewhere else to stay and that there would be no refund. The owner is a fraudulent man and admitted to us that his website is misleading on purpose to take advantage of tourists. My partner and I had constant nose bleeds because the room was so hot and dry. I asked the manager if he thinks it is appropriate for people with health concerns to not be informed of a lack of air conditioning during a heat wave and he did not show any empathy. The manager Simon does not care if you are uncomfortable in the hotel even though their website states rooms are cool, comfortable and provide every “modern amenity”. Manager came off as a liar, stay away and spend your money...
