We stayed at the AC Marriott Centre-Ville this past weekend for two nights. When I booked, I requested an early check-in and a high floor. I also noted that we were there celebrating a milestone birthday. We received NONE of our requests and not a mention of the milestone birthday.
Upon arrival at 3:45 pm, after a long day of travelling with a child and delays, we were met with rather unfriendly staff at the front desk who said our room wasn’t ready and we could have a seat in the lobby. So we waited…
At 4:00 pm, there was a long line up for check-in and I guess miraculously after those 15 minutes, all the rooms were ready. So frustrating. The front desk staff are just on a power trip and need to be reigned in.
We went up to our 5th floor (lol!) room and it was underwhelming. Basic room with two queen beds, a washroom and tv. It didn’t look like the beautiful room online. The air conditioning in the room was not working properly. It was set for 22c… I bumped it down to 18c (I like it cold for sleeping) and after a long night of being too warm and therefore hard to sleep, by morning, it had achieved 21c. Note that the air conditioning control panel lights up the entire room if you touch it at night!
On day two, I called the front desk on the staticky old room phone (for real, it sounded like a phone call from the 1800’s) and they sent someone up to look at the air conditioning. The guy did “adjustments” and then it worked slightly better and achieved 20c after several hours overnight. Do they rig the air conditioning so it doesn’t work?
The washroom is quite spacious and clean but the sliding door is jammy and a pain. I literally had to push it so hard to make it open and close.
There was a notice that rooms are only cleaned every other day unless requested which is atrocious for the amount of money they charge per night for a room. I requested the room be cleaned and it was, but wow, talk about cutting corners and costs.
We looked forward to the pool after a long hot day outdoors, but the pool room was stifling hot and it was hard to breath in there so we didn’t even bother.
Another reason I chose this hotel was the on-site restaurant in case we were tired or if there was bad weather. We ended up not trying the restaurant onsite as there is no buffet for breakfast (which would have been great) and the place was always empty (doesn’t really look attractive if no one is eating there).
The location is pretty good. It’s less than 1km to the main train station and there’s an IGA a block away if you need anything. We went to a lot of activities in Old Montreal and it was just over 1 km walk to that area (which sometimes, in 38c heat, was a haul!).
Honestly, for over $600 per night, it was disappointing. I could have stayed elsewhere for $300 per night for the same room description (coincidentally, another Marriott, about 1km away and closer to the attractions) but thought this hotel would be more luxurious and interested in making their guests requests and stays amazing. I was totally wrong and do not recommend this hotel. It was my first and last time staying at a Marriott! It’s a 3 star at most… absolutely nothing special about this hotel.
p.s. I'm sorry I can't get spacing to work in between paragraphs on here and I blurred out my kid sitting on the bed so that's why that photo has...
Read moreThis was a tough one, staff were excellent. The location has a lot of construction going on directly across the street. Canadian laws allow for work to begin at 7am. Unfortunately the crew can't tell time and started hammering at 6:30 am. This looks like it's going to go on for months. Thankfully the real noise started on out last day. Montreal definately has its open air drug use so expect to see people doing the heroin lean. As far as the hotel it's nice. I didn't care for our bathroom door that was a frosted glass sliding door that did not feel private at all. The exercise room had cardio equipment that was in awful shape, the elliptical would bang on each rotation, all the treadmills sounded bad, in need of bearing replacement. The space had two benches and just dumbells that went up to 70 lbs. This area is so small. One cable like machine that had a triceps attachment but the knob for the adjustment was broken. They had a leg extention machine that was fine. The weight stack for the only cable machine for triceps and curls did not work properly when trying to put the pin in. No back, shoulder, chest machine/barbell or olympic weights were available. I was so disappointed that this part of the hotel was lackluster and not really planned well. The pool was great, and the sauna appeared to work, but I did not use these amenities. Apparently, it's still 1980 in Quebec because everybody still smokes. Lots of close by areas for food and coffee. The popular shopping areas are mere minutes away by walking. The area overall is good. I felt like I was in a bigger Boston with the same Boston issues. Woken up multiple times by police sirens at 2am. I'm not sure why they need them running since nobody is on the road at that time. We stayed for four days. There is a large supermarket IGA 4 min away that is awesome. A mall with food courts is also a few minutes away but the food but some of them look questionable, and the reviews support my statement. The people that work at the restaurants in the area were so polite and some very funny. I did enjoy talking with them. No worries about communicating in English. They are bilingual and, in many instances, trilingual. Chinatown is very small, and that's about a ten minute walk. There are some good restaurants in there. We ate at Chez Chilli, and it was as great as expected. The food and staff were awesome. The Universel Dejeuners et Grillades, which is a five minute walk up a small hill, was also great, really good breakfast and the burgers were great. They have a very good menu and I found their wait staff to be the most accomodating and quite funny. All our food was taken out, but the dining space looks very comfortable and informal, kid friendly. Back to the hotel, laundry is on the fourth floor, and it takes canadian 1 dollar coins. 2.00 for a light load and two dollars for 45 min drying time. More dollars gives you a heavy load and more drying time. The microwave is located on the sixth floor, and the gym and pool are on the twelfth floor. The parking garage is best suited for a compact car but we came in with a Honda pilot three rows and it sucked trying to get it in the parking garage, it's not only tight getting in because it's located in the back through a small alleyway but tight in general parking. Yup, it's a...
