Good food with unwarranted pretentious service . So where do I begin ? I thought my last experience with pretentious hipster wait staff would be at the McGill third wave coffee shop that I never but go to anymore, but apparently not. Upon arriving (hostess was nice) we went downstairs to the speak easy to eat. We were eventually seated at the bar where I politely asked for a Bloody Caesar - the smug waitress (a common character trait they all seemed to have shared this night at the speak easy) responded by saying “oh no sorry we are very Japanese” . Let me clarify that I’ve been working in the service industry for a while and I can recognize a garbage response . - so your sake Paloma is Japanese - or the Japanese inspired old fashioned ? You know you can make a Japanese inspired Caesar right ? Anyways , at this point already annoyed we order our food . The first service of sashimi took a little to come out and was quite good , then we had the fried chicken and udon noodles . The time span to get the chicken was about 10-15m and then after eating the chicken it took the udon about the same amount of time (all together a bit long for tapas style of ordering - especially when the last two dishes are similar) . When I asked if she could check on the noodles she’s responded by “the food comes out when it comes out” and “ they are probably doing something else” ( wow thanks for the information sherlock- you use your college education to figure that one out ) .. more annoyed I just reintegrated for her to go and ask when I really wanted to say be quite , do your job and stop being annoying. When she came back (with the noodles I might add) she told me that I had waited only 11 minutes (wow- and combined was more like 40) and then said “here we do services” without really ever clarifying with you how or in what order you would like your service (of sashimi - fried chicken and noodles- and yes obviously sashimi first) oh so very sophisticated. Anyways I am sick of these places run by 20 /30 something hipsters that give you attitude. Ones that think they are cultured because they work at a new hot spot , they volunteered to build a house for unicef in 2015 and on their last trip to Mexico they went out of there little bubble one day and made friends with the taco vendor by only using hand gestures . Overall food was good but if I owned the place I would ask my staff to politely jump down from whatever second hand pedistool they bought at the local friperie and learn to treat people with respect/ proper customer service. I take attitude from my little sister - shouldn’t have to take it from wait staff at a “high...

Fine, not a huge deal, but this somewhat cold, inhospitable response now obviously foreshadowed the restaurant's fundamental immaturity, which revealed itself throughout the night. Service was somewhat sluggish but excusable by virtue of how pleasant the ambiance is. Unfortunately, shortly after we placed our order, the power went out and this facade collapsed. Our waiter came by after about forty minutes with two entrées, said nothing about the power, and shuffled away. A waitress came by a few minutes later and asked us, rather curtly, if our waiter had informed us about the power situation? We told her that he had not; she told us, in a roundabout way, that we shouldn't be so naive as to expect to see any more food, in not so few words. We requested the bill, which was understandably handwritten, but which we could not settle until another thirty minutes in darkness had passed and two members of my party had gone up to request that we might be allowed to leave for somewhere with light. When the foresaid waitress did come over, we asked if anything on our bill might be comped, us having just eaten what little food we received in a half hour of darkness. How overjoyed were we, out for a formal celebration, to hear that we were entitled to free shots. Sensing that this did not interest us, the waitress offered us "something for free," but as she did, our waiter sauntered over (for the first time in thirty minutes) to let us know that he had, without telling us, comped a drink. The waitress, upon hearing this while putting our totals into the machine, proceeded to tell us, in a profoundly uncomfortable way, that she had gone ahead and skipped the tip. We payed in silence, and as she handed us our receipts, she told us that "fifteen percent should be a sufficient discount," or something to this effect. We would have preferred if she took something off our bill, as we were nonetheless inclined to tip until this last moment. Left in a hurry and ate whatever we found on the way home.
Food is good but frankly nothing to write home about at the end of the day. An experience like this betrays that the restaurant is nothing special. Charming at first glance but ultimately a very puerile place.

Read moreWe experienced a marvellous dinner here. The whole night was most certainly enjoyable with the pleasant atmosphere. We didn't feel the pressure of the surrounding being over fancy nor did ambience feel too casual for a "classy" restaurant. It was a great balance of the two. Our waitress was friendly, patient and respectful. She was always wearing a welcoming smile when taking our orders and bringing food to our table. Although the price of the food seems intimidating at first, especially since the portions are not that big, the quality and the freshness of the seafood makes it worth it. It is actually quite difficult to find this amazing quality of seafood in restaurants nowadays, especially for this price and in Montreal. The salmon was a nice cut that had a great balance of fat and meat, the tuna was incredibly tender and the scallop had an amazing texture with a sweet aftertaste to it. The thing that bothered me the most was probably their presentation. The meal could have looked so much more elegant and sophisticated in my opinion. Maybe it is just me that prefers things to be organized and separated. The rest of complements were also quite enjoyable. The rice wasn't too sticky while also maintaining a great texture, the soya sauce was a bit too salty for me but it was not that big of a problem, and the fresh wasabi had an impactful flavour that kept the meal refreshing. The duck had a great charred exterior which complemented very well the tender meat inside both in terms of texture and flavours. The balance of fat and meat was also great, which makes the dining experience a lot more interesting instead of only raw seafood. We finished the meal with amazing desserts. The creme brulee had a pleasant texture and decent flavours. The whole combination wasn't too sweet which made it enjoyable. My favourite part though was probably their soya ice cream. The slight hint of saltiness was outstanding and it was truly a pleasant way to end the meal. Finally, even though mostly everything was astonishing, I wish they would add a few more options in their menu in the future. The limited choices makes it really easy to get tired of the flavours, and also, it makes it hard to bring larger group of friends. However, even if that doesn't happen, it's still a wonderful restaurant. It might be because they are so limited in options that they can dedicate themselves to honing the quality of the food, reaching the extent they...
