We tried two times to get in here for my 8 month old daughters upcoming heart surgery (The second time after her surgery got rescheduled 3 weeks ago) and both times they got back to us just a couple days before the upcoming date saying: “Sorry, but there isn’t any rooms available.” Each time the receptionist sounded irritated that we ourselves were calling and not a Band representative— the reason for us calling being that response time was crucial to planning.
I’m not sure how many months in advance you need to book here, but it sort of becomes impossible if you don’t get an immediate surgery date… And surgery dates do get rescheduled all the time due to uncontrollable circumstances. So while I can’t judge them based off of how the stay itself is (As we can’t get in in the first place) I can say that the booking process seems to be way more difficult than it needs to be and quite frankly a waste of time if you don’t book unrealistically far in advance. I feel it is much easier to just go through FNHA and your Band or through the BC Residency Program if you can’t afford accommodations.
As a final thought, I do find it disappointing that we can’t be in a familiar/culturally inclusive environment for the hardships ahead and I hope that their “2 week minimum” stay requirements can have policies set in place within the future for families who would like to stay with their loved ones in the hospital over night for support and not at the hotel— as our stay could have been classified as more than 2 weeks if we didn’t plan to stay with her while she was in ICU and recovery.
