Super 8 by Wydham. The property feels quite old and in need of some updates. While they do offer a continental breakfast, the selection is quite limited: boiled eggs (often colder than they should be, as they sit in water inside a crockpot), baked beans, white bread, white bagels, three generic cereals from unmarked containers, instant oatmeal packets, and coffee from an automatic machine. There is also a waffle iron for fresh waffles, along with juice options. One morning, we were served scrambled eggs instead of boiled, which was a nice change, but overall, breakfast could be improved—especially in keeping the eggs warm.
On a positive note, the staff was very friendly and helpful. The young woman working in the breakfast area was welcoming and attentive, and the front desk staff was also pleasant and accommodating throughout my stay.
The location has its pros and cons. While it is a bit far from most business and government offices (expect at least a 10-minute taxi ride to the core), taxis are readily available—I never waited more than two minutes for a City Cab Ltd. vehicle. For convenience, there’s a Tim Hortons right at the doorstep if the breakfast doesn’t suit your taste. A Walmart is within a 5-7 minute walk, and there are a few restaurants and other amenities nearby.
One issue I encountered was with the room heater, which kept defaulting to 28°C. I called the front desk at midnight, and a security guard was sent up to help. He adjusted the settings, and the temperature eventually settled around 26°C, but it was still too warm for my preference.
Overall, while the hotel provides basic accommodations, some improvements—particularly in breakfast quality, temperature control, and general upkeep—would enhance the experience. I would have stayed elewhere but there was an all NWT municipalities conference and all all good hotels...

Read moreWorking in an isolated camp on the Winter Road is just working and sleeping in a little room on my week out I went to a place I call "home". As soon as I walked in the door Manager Catherine and Front Desk Manager Megan greeted me with warm smiles! Then went I went to my room I felt like royalty my room was a gorgeous two room suite, newly renovated and clean as a whistle. My friend who picked me up at the airport and helped me with my luggage to my room was instantly jealous and she wanted to trade her accommodations to the Super 8! I went from a little camp room with a bed, desk and locker in it to a living room, with microwave, fridge, desk, couch and a huge tv PLUS a big bedroom with a king size bed and another huge tv! I felt spoiled! My week out of camp was wonderful, relaxing and every time I went downstairs I was always greeted with a smile and a conversation asking about my plans for the day. The housekeeping staff kept my room sparkling and always provided extra towels which was wonderful as I enjoyed a few relaxing bubble baths! From the staff, to the room, breakfast room and location the Super 8 Yellowknife has everything anyone could want in a place to stay. I am already counting down the days until my next week out of camp so I can go "home" and be cozy...
