I discovered the oasis of the Westin Tianhe back in 2010 after returning from a hot, sunless, sky-less and pollution filled Beijing. The beautiful outdoor swimming pool, gym, sauna, the Qbar on the lobby floor, the Italian restaurant on 40th floor and excellent Chinese restaurant on the 4th floor, the large high ceiling lobby and just the layout and feel of the place all made an impression on me and I have made it a part of my life to return here from Australia every year and spend a compulsory and minimum of 10 days enjoying this hotel.
I travel purely for leisure and not for business. There have been times when I stayed more than 20 nights straight in this hotel. And recently became a platinum member.
I usually don’t write reviews as things seems to be running well and I am happy. But this year, I feel I need to say a few things here.
During this year’s travels, I arrived with anticipation from Phuket Thailand to the Westin Tianhe. I am not a man who expects special treatment in life, we are all equal. But as my membership changed recently from gold to platinum, I was curious to see what this meant and to see if there was any differences.
On check in, I noticed no difference at all. It was just as gold membership. No talk of upgrade to suite (even though I have 9 suite nights available and will expire in December). Also no mention of access to any lounges that a platinum member might have. If there was, I didn’t know as nothing was mentioned.
As one other review mentioned, there are no real ques here, it is whoever arrives first and whoever is quickest to reach the front edge of the check-in counter.
After settling into my room, I went down to the life of the hotel- The Qbar down on the right side of the lobby. But was disappointed to find the Qbar had been removed all together. Instead, replace by a lounge and a watered down version of a bar had been integrated into the 40th floor Italian restaurant area. As a result of this change, both the ex Qbar location is dead and soulless and the makeshift bar on the 40th floor is the same soulless. Why would anyone want to remove the foundation and life of a hotel? Why would you take something vibrant and a place where many enjoyed and turn it into a lifeless, quiet and dead place? What has happened here, management or something has changed? If so, what is the management thinking? Why would you want your revenue to fall? Why would you take something that was the foundation and fun part of this hotel that offered a friendly, relaxing and vibrant atmosphere and turn it into a place where lights are out and a dead zone? I had had many good nights at the Qbar, spending money and being happy (what a hotel should make guests feel). I remember many people, foreigners and locals wrapped around the bar chairs watching live sport, having a drink in a very enjoyable atmosphere. Wednesday and Friday nights would be salsa nights where the place would be packed, providing both locals and guests a great, fun and vibrant night. To take that great thing and destroy it is so clearly a wrong move. Change is good, but only if it make things better and not worse. If it is not broken, then don’t fix it. Action- bring back the Qbar ASAP.
Very few available lockers left in the men’s change room in the pools and gym facility that is free for hotel guests to use. Most seems locked and occupied by local members. And the 5 or 6 lockers that are left available for guests to use out of the estimated 40 lockers built, have doors that have hinge problems. Some flapping on one hinge. Take some of the money this hotel makes and fix these locker doors immediately. Don’t let overseas guests see this condition in a 5 star Westin.
Ordered some room service, 2 eggs. Asked for some bread rolls and butter to be included. The girl on the phone could not understand “bread roll”. She said that there is no bread on the menu and bread does not come with the egg order. Damn it, just put 2 bread rolls and some butter on the side so I can use bread to eat the eggs. It appeared they finally understood as they had to ask the chef if it was possible to include some bread and butter with the egg order. The eggs arrived. I took a look and no bread rolls and butter. Instead, I see 2 chocolate donuts. Even though I spoke to two people and it appeared they knew what I had meant by bread. Still had this problem. Imagine eating the eggs with chocolate donuts. All I wanted was some bread and butter with my eggs! So easy. But so difficult to explain and get. The room service boy understood, but by then, the eggs were cold. Finally some bread arrived.
I had a 60 minute massage one day. It was average. I found the cost to be very excessive at 800rmb. As a guide, in Australia, a 60 minute massage would cost $70AUD(350rmb) in Thailand would cost 250thb (50rmb).
Walk into the sauna, locker and change room area and smell cigarette smoke on occasions. Not a good feeling when you have just spent 1 hour on the tread mill and gym to gain fitness and with aim to improve lung capacity.
Still a good hotel, but for the first time in 6 years, I am considering seeing what other 5 star Starwood have to offer in the neighborhood to...

Our four-night stay at The Westin Guangzhou during the Canton Fair was marked by exceptional service and amenities that made our visit memorable. Despite encountering challenges with the English language among some staff members, their courteous and professional demeanor ensured a pleasant experience throughout our stay.
Situated within a sprawling property, The Westin Guangzhou boasts impressive facilities including both indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a sauna, spa, and the renowned Italian restaurant, Prego, along with the exclusive Westin Club. Convenient services such as a money exchange ATM and attentive concierge were readily available to cater to guests' needs.
A standout feature was the complimentary shuttle service to and from the Canton Fair, making transportation seamless and hassle-free. While the breakfast spread offered a lavish selection, vegetarian Indian travelers may find limited options among the predominantly non-vegetarian dishes.
We were appreciative of the hotel's provision of ample drinking water and Vita-Soy milk daily upon our return from the fair, catering to our hydration and dietary preferences. The generously sized rooms were equipped with all the necessary amenities, ensuring a comfortable and relaxing retreat after a long day at the fair.
However, it's worth noting that the elevated pricing during the Canton Fair period, nearly three times higher than usual, may pose a consideration for budget-conscious travelers. Nonetheless, The Westin Guangzhou's combination of luxury, convenience, and top-notch service makes it a desirable choice for visitors attending the fair, reaffirming its reputation as a premier hospitality destination...
