I visited Cairo in 2016 but stayed at the Hotel Royal, where I was originally going to stay again this time, along with 6 of my friends. However, upon reaching out to the hotel, I was told to stay at their newer hotel Capital Hotel. It was slightly more expensive, as little as $5 more a night but the interiors appeared nicer so we didn't mind. Upon booking, we received an email saying thank you for your reservation, along with information about the tours. So this was the first issue, the tour options were $15 to $20 more than what was listed for their Hotel Royal which made no sense to me as they're not far from each other. I inquired about the price discrepancies and they were able to honor the quoted prices for the Hotel Royal. The next price discrepancy, in our confirmation email for the hotel, we were told the shuttle for the airport was $15, but in other communication they said $25. In which management says it changes depending on your number if people, despite just myself being quoted $25. Our trip back, we found a service that drove all of us for $15! Also, we received communication that the guide was $10 but in other communication we were told $20. With regards to the tours, they're not tours. It's just a person driving you places. The amount you're paying doesn't cover ANY entry fees, camel/ horse ride, tips, water. Only a car. It's not worth it, you can get an uber to all these places for a lot cheaper or go through Get Your Guide and reserve a tour and it's all inclusive for the same price or even cheaper. Our "tour" to the pyramids cost an additional $100/pp on top of the $25/pp we already paid. Our next day, they said there's no guide, which made no sense as it was suppose to be a walking tour through Old Cairo, the Egyptian museum, citadel and Mosque. Are we suppose to tour ourselves through old Cairo not knowing a damn thing? I did these exact tours last time, was accompanied and there's no way we can navigate the streets and passages ways by ourselves. Eventually the driver assisted them through the incorrect bazaar from what was listed realizing we're unfamiliar with the area. Do not listen to the descriptions on the website, it's very misleading. What they're describing will costs you an additional $60+ dollars each day, depending on entry fees, not covered services, tips, bottled water, etc. We were quoted $35 to $40 per person for the Nile dinner cruise but were able to reserve it for $15/pp elsewhere and it's the exact same thing as I've done it before. On the second night, two rooms flooded due to one room having an issue with the plumbing, but they had all the supplies ready to deal with it so I'm sure it's not the first time. Everyone was moved out of the two rooms into one which is annoying because we paid for the three rooms. We were eventually told the next evening that we could move everything back into the other rooms but of course the next morning I get up to shower and in less than 10 minutes the bathroom floor is flooded so I get out and notify them, so I was moved to another room. The third room that wasn't flooded had a leaking AC unit that was dripping on to one of the beds that we shifted over and was also emitting a very off putting smell, like mold. One of our travelers luggage was delayed from the airport, after 3 days, we decided to venture there to claim it and we're told it was dropped off at the hotel the previous day but no one notified us, despite them knowing it was going to be delivered. The staff is very friendly bunch, from management to their cleaning people so it sincerely is disappointing that the operations and logistics are terrible from start to finish. Management did offer a partial refund of the tour and a free shuttle to the airport (A week later and I'm still waiting for the refund and we had already arranged cheaper transportation to the airport.). But it's not about the money, at the end of the day, it's more bout the additional stress these situations all caused while we're trying to...
Read moreThis Hotel, Cairo Capital Plaza, overcharged my credit card and REFUSED to credit me. I originally paid with $200 U.S. cash (by the way, they never gave me back my $5 change) and then they called me down to the reception desk to take one of my two $100 bills back because it had a very tiny rip in it. They claimed the bank would not accept it with even a tiny rip. I gave them a credit card expecting them to charge me $100 dollars and instead they charged me the full $200. I did not notice this happened until after my trip and when I messaged them multiple times and even called they refuse to acknowledge what happened and refund me stating that they did not charge me $200 on my credit card even though my statement indicated they did. Because I did not have a cash receipt I was unable to get a refund through my credit card company and overpaid by $100 U.S. dollars including credit card fees for the International charges for a less than mediocre hotel. Cairo Capital Plaza was not especially clean, the beds were uncomfortable (we asked for two beds and they gave us one king), and had several flights of stairs with no elevator to get to the reception desk. Cairo Capital Plaza is located in a crowded, very dirty part of the city, and there’s no way I felt safe going out after dark. Book this hotel with caution and ask for a receipt when paying with cash. Cairo Capital Plaza should be rated “motel”. I do...
Read moreWhen we arrived at 10pm to check in after a long day of traveling, we were told by the receptionist named Ahmed, that he did not have confirmation of our booking. We showed him the hotels.com booking confirmation code. He kept saying he needed to call someone to confirm. He then informed us that the hotel was actually overbooked and there was no room for us.
After that shocking news we asked to speak to the manager and he rudely refused. We asked for his name and he refused. Offering no solutions whatsoever he finally called the manager. They offered to kick someone out of a room and clean the room. We ostensibly said no. The receptionist continued to be incredibly rude and was laughing in our faces. He then shouted and screamed at us and while talking on the phone with his manager he said “these people won’t be staying in the hotel tonight!!”
I HAVE NEVER experienced this amount of unprofessionalism and hostility in all the years I have traveled. This hotel should be ashamed of itself.
Hotels.com was able to issue us a voucher. But hotels.com should immediately delist this unprofessional hotel from...
