Every now and again, the stars align and you find that special place. Hotel La Villa Fleurie is one of those places. We made a 6.30pm phone call when about 30 kms away and Jonathon picked up the phone and spoke excellent English. He had a room available for $74 euro and 9 euro for breakfast. We took the room (we had our own breakfast already) and 30 minutes later parked at the rear of the property and entered the most delightful accommodation. Centrally located and easily accessible, the Villa has a quaint feel about it and having only taken it over in the last few weeks, Jonathon was ready to put his own stamp his business. The foyer is open and to the left when you enter is the dining room. Further on there is a sitting room with dappled light, comfy chairs and magazines ready for you to relax in. Jonathon gave us a little intro about the property, how to access the building after hours, checkout time and gave us a map with directions to the little village which was very, very useful because we ate at Le Carnot (which is another review). Our room was on the first floor and it used a good old traditional key to get in. A large comfortable king size bed covered with a bedspread which hid the sheets and blanket greeted us. Yes – no doonas / quilts / duvets here. Nice. The décor is simple and somewhat provincial in feel. It’s certainly not fancy and that’s just how we like it. There was a tv but we didn’t turn it on. There are extra pillows and blankets, fresh towels in the bathroom and the usual simple toiletries. It was a shower over a bath so not sure how disabled friendly this accommodation would be. Certainly would be great for kids. Plenty of powerpoints to charge and use electrical items. Wifi was good although it took ME a little while to log on – not the Villa’s issue there. We had the window open part of the night for fresh air and it was relatively quiet. Didn’t hear a peep from any other guests. No fridge in room but Jonathon was happy to put one of our items in his kitchen. He also gave us a spoon, two glasses and some ice when we asked. Nothing was ever too much trouble. In these days when some people can be a little too precious, Jonathon was a breath of fresh air. There was parking at the rear and the small garden area had two sets of tables and chairs to use as well as lounge chairs. Twice we sat outside with our computers to catch up on mail with our shoes off so the toes could explore the grass. And yes, I found a four leaf clover so that was a nice sign for us. As a regular traveller, travel writer and blogger I found Villa Le Fluerie to be the oasis we needed amongst the noise of so many other places I’d rested my...
Read moreThe hotel is fairly close to the train station and not too difficult of a walk if you do not have a car. They do have parking at the hotel which would be convenient if you do have a car. The hotel is about a 15 minute walk to the city walls where there are plenty of shops and cafes. If you do have trouble walking too much though keep that in mind. There really isn’t too much directly near the hotel for dinner, groceries, etc. We were only there for one night, so it didn’t bother us. The hotel is decorated in a simple lovely style and everything was clean. The gentleman who checked us in was nice and gave us a few recommendations on restaurants and things to do in the city. We did choose to pay for the breakfast at the hotel which was your standard French breakfast with some pastries, cheese, meat, yogurt, eggs, etc. It was good as well as the pot of coffee. There is no coffee maker in the room and no water that I’m aware of. I wanted a beer that evening, but unfortunately they had ran out. It’s a bit of an older building so the floors squeak and the walls aren’t super insulated so we could hear the neighboring rooms fairly easily, but thankfully everyone went to bed at a decent time and weren’t unruly. Overall I enjoyed my stay and would definitely recommend it. There’s a pizza truck place we wanted to try as it received so many good ratings, but it was a bit of a walk without a car. We ended up getting a pizza at L’oriental since it was by the train...
