This Basilica of Our Lady of Beaune is considered to be one of the last fantabulou and great Romanesque churches in Bourgogne! Absolutely beautiful on both the east and west façades. It's actually a combination of a basilica and a convent attached to this church. Both are classified as historic monuments. It dates back to the twelfth century with incredible history if you have time to read up on it. The nave has two aisles with a transept, a liturgical choir with an apse. The vaulted ceiling is quite spectacular and the ambulatory space behind the main apse is stunning. There's a portal on the right transept that leads into the cloister gallery but it was closed when I visited. It's quite restrained in decor but absolutely peaceful and tranquil place. There's a lot to take in when inside with beautiful organ buffet and chapels. Absolutely worth visiting. It's quite easy to find from the train station and about a couple of minutes walk to Hôtel...

Read moreA wonderful 12th century "local Church". Beaune is well noted for its wines--- but the culture and role of religion is equally significant. This Church's construction started in the "mid 12th Century [about 860+ years ago]. In the 13th-16th century additional chapels were added. It has been listed/recognized as a french "Historical Monument" since 1640! The Romanesque architecture and intricate stained glass windows are also very interesting. At night, there is an excellent "Light Show". TripAdvisor has also recognized it with the "Certificate of Excellence". It is definitely off the 'tourist trail"-- but definitely worthy of a visit.
