I work in a restaurant and I have to say this whole dining experience was extremely upsetting. We were denied a table outside because our party was “too large to fit” but saw a party the same size as ours sat there less than 15 minutes after us. The service was incredibly slow, detached, and uncaring, even by French standards. Our server was incredibly rude and was incredibly intransigent about removing allergens in certain foods due to guests allergies. After waiting over 20 minutes to have our order taken, our server told us that, because the kitchen was closing he would bring out our courses ALL AT THE SAME TIME!! The portions were very small, especially the roast chicken, although some of them tasted delicious. All five of us ordered a fixed menu and when we finished our first two courses we had to wait 30+ minutes for our server to come and ask us if we wanted dessert (after of course already ordering it and repeating it with us twice). Additionally, while our server visited our table only twice during our almost 2 hour meal, we were kept constant company by a swarm of flies. This whole experience was truly terrible and I couldn’t recommend this place less for anyone looking for a good meal/good experience in the beautiful...

We had one night in Beaune and, as a family of four, were strolling and looking for something when we came across Le Monge. The set menu looked approachable and another couple said they liked their food so we decided to give the restaurant a try. We opted for a table outside and had our entrees in good time. Then cold rain set in and a table behind us with older customers were left with no cover and no staff came to assist them. Then we waited nearly 45 minutes for our main. We were cold and asked to be moved inside. This was arranged. Then we were ignored. We asked when the main might arrive. We were, by now, very hungry and tired. About 10 minutes later our meals arrived. Very ordinary but edible. Then we waited another 30 or so minutes for dessert. We were about to leave when it arrived. We ate and then had to ask 4 or 5 times for the bill. The bill when it came was 200 euros for which we had been treated shabbily and served mediocre food. Based on our experience I so wish we had chosen somewhere...

Nice terrace, shame about the rest.

We came for dinner on Sunday. Positives? The kitchen opens early (6 p.m.), wine by the glass was pleasant and well-priced, and they welcomed our dog on the terrace — which we appreciated. Though not even offering a bowl of water for the dog felt like a missed (and basic) courtesy.

The food? Let’s just say it looked like fast food and tasted like apathy. Escargots were fine. Pork ribs were dry and clearly pre-cooked, with frozen fries and a salad drowning in sour dressing. The babette d’aloyau was chewy and bland — edible, but only if you're really hungry.

Service was the real pièce de résistance. Invisible throughout the meal, and when we wanted to pay for the set menu — we waited 25 minutes, then gave up and found the till ourselves. Oh, and they tried to sneak in drinks we never ordered — over €20 worth. Classy move.

If you're in the area, there are better places just steps away — with real charm, better food, and...

We stopped at le Monge for a spontaneous dinner. Being a Brasserie I would have expected that the “simple things” should be the good ones on the menu though. I went for a menu Bourguignon even though it didn’t make me feel good that the snails aren’t prepared in house. In total it was an underwhelming experience. The dishes seem to be rather targeted to tourists, the cuts of meet are fatty and scraggy and the Crème brûlée was an offence. I would stop at le monge for a beer, but wouldn’t give another chance to their food.
