Staying at this hotel was meant to be the highlight of our four week long Europe trip because we booked and paid for the tower room with Supposedly the best Eiffel views along with the best service, etc, but we were very disappointed. We booked to stay for two nights. We arrived at the hotel at around 5pm after a delayed flight walked up to the reception desk and waited. The two ladies behind the counter were talking when we walked in, they saw us, made eye contact, I said hello and nothing, then looked at each other and continued talking. After about a few minutes of waiting one of them looks up and asks, ‘checking in?’ and then took their time to check us in while chatting among themselves in French. It felt very very impersonal. We walked into the room assigned to us and it was room 35, with the view of the top of the Eiffel, which was DISAPPOINTING because there are a few other rooms on the top floor (4th and 5th) that have way better views than the ‘tower room’ on the 3rd floor. I went down to reception to ask for the room to be changed and again, I walked up to the desk and again the two women at the desk look at me and then continue chatting and ignore me, until I say hello. The conversation continued to be nothing short of rude, the blonde woman with glasses was short and said ‘we can’t help you, everyone comes to Paris to celebrate a special occasion’ amongst other things that left me stumped!! She finally agreed to give us room 55 for one night and made it look like a huge favour because (her words) ‘the other person booked in February and you booked in March’. My husband went back down later to ask if we could get a room upstairs for two nights and he came back very upset because of the same interaction; 1. Being ignored 2. Talked rudely to 3. Made it look like we didn’t deserve the good rooms.
Finally we got moved to 55 for the same night and then moved back to room 35 the day after.
Room 55 does have good views and it was obvious the rooms beside it have great views too. But they are tiny. They price tag is hefty but cheaper than the 4 and 5 stars with Eiffel views in the area, so the price at this property is just for the view with basic amenities.
All in all the interaction with the women at reception ruined our stay, we were uncomfortable and on edge and couldn’t wait to leave.
Thank you reception ladies for making our trip ‘not so special after all’ (especially the blonde woman with glasses).
We will definitely not be returning to...
Read moreWe liked the Hotel Duquesne for the location and staff. Otherwise, the rooms were very small and difficult to manoeuvre (I highly recommend you book several months in advance for one of the larger rooms). You will also hear the noise of toilets flushing and water running down the walls all night (at first we thought there were rats in the walls!)
We had booked a courtyard view but got the top of a dirty roof directly out our window instead. Also, the carpet throughout the hotel and in the rooms were definitely due for a steam cleaning or complete removal - they were very dirty leaving a pair of white socks with filthy stains. The safe in the room was very small and required a skeleton key we had to carry everywhere (unlike modern hotel safes with digital combinations). Also, when we first arrived in our room, there was a horrible smell coming from the toilet. There is a toilet brush sitting in the bathroom for a reason - when we scrubbed around the toilet, chunks of feces dropped into the bowl - clearly the toilets are not well cleaned - disgusting.
As mentioned, service and location were good, you are in the middle of many monuments and tourist attractions such as Napoleon's Tomb and the Eiffel Tower. My wife and I walked the city for hours each day to see other attractions such as the Catacombs.
The water pressure was good in the tiny shower (large people will not fit!) and the morning breakfasts were excellent.
In summary, we wouldn't stay here again. We liked the breakfast and staff, but the rooms were far too small and dirty for our liking. Also, a courtyard view that looks out onto a dirty roof was laughable.
Good for the value conscious but not clean or comfortable enough for us. Thanks to the staff who worked the front desk and breakfast restaurant, you were very...
Read moreVery displeased. First, the location…not bad at all, just not as close to the ET as indicated on all literature. 10 minute walk? More like 25 minutes. But that wasn’t the end of the world. It was a nice pleasant walk to numerous places from the hotel. The customer service was really good. Always very helpful and friendly. Our issue was the room. We knew the rooms were going to be small. We also knew that this was an old French building, so we fully expected a lot of antiques and nostalgia. What we didn’t expect was not just old carpet, but possibly original carpet that was filthy. I don’t think they vacuum very often, nor do they clean carpets regularly. We travel with our own sheets…thank goodness because there were a few hairs in our bed. The sheets were crisp white, but we just couldn’t get past the hairs on them. The bathroom was spotless, I will admit that. Very clean. But the thick cobwebs on the bathroom ceiling. Inexcusable. We couldn’t understand the half shower door. We had to cover darn near everything with towels. A half shower door??? Made no sense. With that being said the shower pressure and heat…amazing. That’s about the only thing invigorating about the room. Taking a shower. Always nice. When we left each day, we had to leave a window open, otherwise the odor that we’d come back to wasn’t very pleasant. Old, dank and musty. The mattress was hard. Very hard. My hips and back could barely take it at night. I think the old building and the nostalgia was a nice French touch, but just because something is old doesn’t mean is shouldn’t be cleaned and updated as needed. We made the best of it, I mean we were in Paris, but all in all, the accommodations really need a lot of work....
