Unfortunately, we did not have a good experience at the Frankfurt Airport Marriott. After testing positive for COVID at the EcoCare testing center in the airport (next door to the hotel) before heading home, I was forced to isolate for 6 days, per Germany's health guidelines for COVID. I came across a review on Trip Advisor from someone in a similar situation that gave the Marriott a great review for hospitality during the reviewer's isolation. Thankfully, the Frankfurt Airport Marriott allowed myself and my partner to stay at the hotel to isolate, and we ended up staying for 7 nights.
During check-in, we were told that the rate was high due (€419 per night) to an event happening in the area, but that it would be reduced after the first night, and that the manager should be able to work to get a lower rate when we checked out. I also mentioned that I could get a rate discount through my employer, which I did not have upon booking/checking in at the front desk as we were on leisure travel, and was told once I got the corporate code it could be applied to the stay.
Once I received my corporate code, I followed up with the Front Desk Manager (Cemre) who informed me that it could not be applied retroactively and we would have to check out and create a new stay on the Marriott site using the reduced rate; he also told us that he could, in fact, not reduce the rate for the previous nights at checkout. Once we checked out and checked back in for the reduced rate, we found out that the €419 rate had applied to every night so far and ended up paying €1346 for three nights (including VAT). The rate for the final four nights did drop; however, it was still quite high compared to other hotels in the area. We ended up moving to a Hyatt five minutes away for €100 per night.
Apart from the issue with the cost of the room, we were not impressed with the room itself. We had a King bed, which was very firm, a broken table (which did get fixed), and the water for the shower takes a long time to get warm. The food in the hotel restaurant was also very expensive, where even things like croissants were almost double the cost of a croissant at a kiosk right outside entrance to the hotel. There are plenty of other options for food well within walking distance from the hotel in the airport without needing to go through security.
Fortunately, the majority of the staff was very respectful and welcoming, even when we had an issue with our upstairs neighbor making a lot of noise (even though the building is concrete) in the very late and early morning hours. As an aside, we were not able to hear the planes unless it was very cloudy or raining, so the hotel itself is rather quiet, with the exception of our upstairs neighbor and the occasional door slamming in the hallway. I am giving the second star for the majority of the staff who was very pleasant and helpful, especially as we were running around frantically in the beginning trying to figure out where to stay to isolate. Unfortunately, my partner, who did not test positive and was given permission by both the Frankfurt local health authority and Marriott management to leave the room, came across a rude staff member who tried to tell her that she was not allowed to leave the room. The same staff member also told her that the VAT added to the bill(s) could be refunded at the airport, which ended up being incorrect.
Overall, I cannot really recommend this hotel unless you want to stay right at the airport and be able to walk to your flight, but tread carefully and check the rates at the hotel. The staff was mostly pleasant, but the experience was spoiled by the issue with cost given that we were being forced to isolate and felt a bit taken advantage of. We were told a few times that they would "see what they could do" about the rate, but nothing ever changed. The Director of Rooms (Peter) did follow up with me directly to apologize, but I believe it was too...
Read moreFirst of all, always, the positives - the front desk staff at every encounter were friendly, delightful, and helpful. We arrived too early to check in but we were very comfortable in their lounge until our room was available, and the front desk attendant came to find us when it was ready.
The bed was super comfortable, which was appreciated after a full overnight flight, followed by the adventure that is always the Frankfurt airport (two and a half hours between arriving at the gate and getting to the hotel check-in). And when I say super comfortable, I mean heaven. I realize that everyone has preferences for firmness but whatever they have was exactly what I needed for a couple of naps and sleep before an early morning flight out.
Room service was quick ... expensive as heck of course, but that's not unusual. The family room was very spacious, with an anteroom sufficient for a lot of luggage. Lots of outlets.
Some areas for improvement ...
Air conditioning. It is 2022 and this room was $500, if I want my room to feel like the arctic tundra, it should be doable ... but we would have been happier with just "not stuffy." Other reviews have mentioned it and I'm amplifying because it really needs to be addressed. We contacted the front desk to ask for assistance in figuring out why we couldn't get it to come on, they responded quickly in chat and we maxed it but it never did get cooler. They offered to send a technician up but we were so tired, I didn't feel like we should have to have a technician, this is a known issue (per my reading once realized it was an issue) and should be resolved by now. This one thing would steer me away from booking here again, at least in the summer.
The LIGHTS! OMG what sadist designed the lighting system in these rooms. Other reviewers have also commented on this but it is INSANE, it's like a puzzle game, which would be fun if I was paying for a Frankfurt Airport themed escape room - which would be idea, btw, navigating that airport is always a nightmare even if everyone who works there is nice - but not when I'm tired, at my last nerve, and just want to figure out how to turn on some of the lights but not all of the lights. If I had small children and was trying to keep them asleep and had to deal with this I'd be way angrier about it than I am, but it's really bad. At the very least, detach the reading lamps by the beds from all other systems.
The door to the bathroom offers little in the way of silencing, so if you're having any kind of gastro distress, I hope you're with good friends or family who loves you. The rest of the bathroom was great, nice water pressure and not complicated or cryptic with the shower controls. The hair dryer is excellent.
My husband kept walking into the hanging lighting feature, which is inexplicably low and in the middle of a pathway, that should be raised a bit or removed entirely.
And finally, getting to the hotel was unnecessarily difficult. I know now that there used to be only one hotel there, the Marriott Sheraton, and that's all that the internal signage indicates, but Google Maps clearly shows a Marriott and a Sheraton, two separate properties, and has them appearing in two different places. Follow the signs to the Marriott Sheraton, and once you get into the shared entryway space you'll see arrows on the floor directing you to one or the other. If you have luggage carts, you'll need to go two levels up from baggage claim, which will involve finding two elevator banks, so that you can get to a glass walkway over by the A terminal. If you just have carry-on, I think you can follow what Google thinks and walk across from the baggage claim area, but I'm not sure.
I'd stay here again now that I know the issues (except, as mentioned before, in the summer, if the AC isn't fixed) as long as my employer was...
Read moreNot a fan. At. All. (Note that the Sheraton next door is run by the same management.)
It took us 3 calls to get foam pillows and luggage racks. 2 people we spoke with did not even know what they were. We have been gone forever and have 5 bags. We are too old to be getting stuff out of bags on the floor as was suggested, and this hotel is too expensive for that anyway.
Later, the elevators were out, and no one bothered to tell anyone. I had to leave the elevator lobby area on 9th floor and ask the M Club receptionist about it. She must have seen me go to the elevator and didn’t bother to tell me they weren’t working. It caused me great anxiety to know I could not leave.
She suggested I take the stairs to the lobby if I needed to go immediately. Otherwise I could wait. My bad knee would not have made it.
Why did no one put a sign up?
Just for fun, the bathroom is in no way private. Please see my photos. If you are sitting on the toilet, people in the room can see you. If you are in the shower, anyone entering the room can see you, including any staff if you accidentally forget to put the deadbolt on the door.
Lastly, part of our nightly routine for winding down is watching TV. We have a long hdmi cord we travel with so we can hook it up to a phone and watch our own shows on any tv in the world. We could not get it to work and called down for the engineer. Again, no one came.
When he finally came, we found that nothing would make it work. There have been a rare few properties that don’t allow this and have set their entertainment systems to reject it, but in those rare instances, management offers Netflix, Hulu, or SOMETHING. Until tonight.
This property ignores requests by guests and does absolutely nothing to help them pass the time in the manner they choose while they are trapped at an airport hotel, far from the city. I cannot believe their contract with Marriott allows them to get away with this.
Update: as we were trying to sleep, we could not figure out what the rumbling sound was that happened every few minutes.
It was other rooms’ stupid sliding bathroom doors!!!
Sadly, we may have to stay here again
(Cannot figure out how to caption photos, so here are the captions: View of my husband through closed bathroom door, view of shower through closed bathroom door, view of TV that is absolutely useless [YouTube does not...
