From 20 to 26 August 2022 we spent 7 nights at the Golden Age Hotel, Athens, and following a brief tour around Greece we returned again for one night on 1 September before leaving for Santorini.
Everything about the hotel was of a good standard. Firstly, the staff at reception were kind, welcoming and accommodating. The rooms and bathrooms were comfortable and simply, but very efficiently, designed. The breakfast offerings were varied and tempting. The breakfast staff were attentive but unobtrusive. If we had an early morning start, the hotel would provide takeaway breakfasts provided in very sturdy boxes which did not disintegrate as is often the case.
The only criticism is that, although the hotel provides tea and coffee making facilities in the room which as Australians we truly appreciated, the offerings were minuscule, especially the milk, which did not cater to Australian requirements and tastes. However, we could always obtain extras on request.
The location is very good. It is away from the hurly-burly of locations like the Plaka. However a two stop train ride or a 30 minute walk would get you there very easily through very attractive streets. The hotel is located on a broad street in a more residential neighbourhood, so you get a feel for how locals live their lives rather than being in a tourist trap. The subway, built for the 2004 Olympics, is modern, efficient, easy to negotiate and of a good standard. We were only a 5 minute walk from Megaro Musicis station.
We would highly recommend a stay at this Athens hotel.

Read moreI stayed for four nights to attend a conference at the nearby Megaron Mousikis concert hall and conference centre. The hotel was booked by the organisers for me and other guest speakers from abroad. I found the hotel to be really excellent in all respects. ||It’s is quite new with a clean modern design made with high quality materials, e.g. marble and wooden floors. Rooms are very well designed with superking size bed, good storage, fridge and safe, and small but very good bathroom with a great walk-in shower. An example of the attention to detail of the build and design is the very flexible and advanced lighting choices available in the rooms. Flooring in the bedroom is parquet and it would be more cosy with carpet but I was very happy with it.||Breakfast buffet was excellent with freshly-cooked hot breakfast, good pastries and bread but also good Greek offerings including yoghurt, honey, fruit, nuts, pastries. Excellent service in the breakfast room and front desk. I did not try the bar, which looked very pleasant, or the dining room.||Finally, this is a very good location. It was ideal for my conference and for dinners out on foot very locally or in nearby Kolonaki, which is a smart area. It’s also at most 5 minutes to the metro station for direct access to the airport or Athens centre. I go to Greece often and will definitely use this...
Read moreReception: efficient 4* Room service : closes at 1030 pm even if you missed them by 5 mins. I managed to catch them on the 1st night and ordered a linguine with sun-dried tomatoes and spinach - pasta slightly overcooked and under seasoned. The dish looks uninviting. The food needs more care! There is a doner restaurant just a short walk across the road. Don't bother to fuss with the hotel restaurant at all . 2*

The negative: offers a bottle of water on checking in. I'm staying at the hotel for 5 days and they refused to provide water for the other 4 days I'm staying which I don't understand , if they could offer a bottle on the checked in day, and I've paid full price for the other 4 days , why can't they offer the same and be nicer to a customer who is putting up at the place for a longer time? When the issue was broubght to their attention, all they had to say " it's the hotel policy!"
Don't want their customer to have a good experience with them? Customers need not to obey your policies. We pay for the service and we expect satisfaction. I don't get...
