Stayed three nights at Papstathis Guesthouse. The positives: excellent location for walkers like my wife and I; superb views from the rooms; clean, comfortable rooms with good beds, small shower but plentiful hot water. The negatives. I must agree with another reviewer who said this guesthouse does not offer true Greek hospitality. Take breakfast. On this trip we had visited five islands in the Dodecanese and Thessaloniki to pick up a rental car and drive to Meteora. Breakfast at every establishment that we stayed consisted of fresh fruit - figs, watermelon, melon, yoghurt, honey, feta, tomatoes, cucumber, olives, hams and cheeses, rolls, jams and marmalades portions, pastries. Our first morning at Papstathis we each received a small portion of yoghurt with honey,a toasted ham and cheese sandwich, and bread with jam and butter portions. Second morning we were presented with a hard boiled egg each, no yoghurt. My wife doesn't each eggs so she asked for yoghurt, which she did receive. But I wasn't offered any. Tea and coffee was similar. You had to ask. We drink tea and were presented with a cup of hot water and a tea bag. If you wanted more you had to ask. Then there was the hand printed list of " Don't dos" in the room. Don't smoke: fair enough. Don't prepare food in the room: we had salads and tuna bought at the local supermarket for dinner one night which we ate regardless. Don't wash clothes in the room; we had been travelling for four weeks with a limited amount of luggage and wash our underwear, shorts and shirts on a regular basis. No problems anywhere else but here. My wife asked the proprietress if it would be possible to have a load done in their washing machine and pay for it. No they were too busy. We choose to stay in guesthouses because they are family owned and offer local knowledge of the area and friendly hospitality. Alas at Papastathis the hosts do not seem to understand this concept. Which is a shame because the establishment has so...
Read moreWe had mixed impressions about this guesthouse, so I’ll share both the positives and the downsides.
The biggest advantage is definitely the location-the views are absolutely stunning, it feels like you can almost touch the beauty of Meteora around you. It’s also the closest place to the small monastery of Saint Nicholas Anapafsas-just a short walk away, so you don’t have to deal with traffic or parking. Unfortunately, we weren’t lucky with the weather: on the second day there was heavy rain and thick fog, so we didn’t manage to see any other monasteries. But based on other reviews though, it seems they’re all quite easy to reach.
We had a double room with a beautiful panoramic view of Meteora. The host was very kind and friendly. The room was clean and had a small fridge, a hairdryer, and basic toiletries. It’s about a 10-minute walk to the restaurants, though there’s one just a minute away (we read it wasn’t the best, so we walked to Taverna Ouzeri PAPPAS instead-and it was absolutely worth it!).
Now for some downsides(from our perspective): the room was quite small, and the bathroom was tiny. It was almost impossible to take a shower without getting the whole area wet. It was fine for one night, but for a longer stay it might feel uncomfortable.
We also booked room with breakfast, which turned out to be a mistake for us. The food was fresh but the portions were really small: for two people we got 2 slices of ham, 4 slices of cheese, 2 boiled eggs, some jam and butter, 4 pieces of bread, and two small bowls of yogurt, plus tea and coffee (the coffee wasn’t great). We’re used to having a more filling breakfast while traveling since we skip lunch, so this wasn’t quite enough. So we went down to Kalambaka and found several great cafés serving tasty and affordable breakfasts with excellent coffee.
Overall, this guesthouse is a good choice for its price, especially if you value location and don’t mind a bit...
Read moreGuesthouse Papastathis is an excellent location, right at the food of the Meteoras. Bus stops right in front of the house, free parking also available. The view in the morning from the rooms is breathtaking.||||The owners are very friendly and nice people. They were very kind to wait for us late in the night (we had some car trouble on the way). Before leaving we also had a nice chat with them in English, which was a bit limited, but not a problem as some other reviews suggested.||||The rooms are clean, of decent size and well furnished. The guesthouse has good and fast WiFi, but the signal does not reach the rooms in the basement. The only thing we missed from the room was the refrigerator, a necessity in the hot greek summers.||||If you are easily woken up, this might not be for you, because you can hear the bells of the church (starting from 6 in the morning) and the goats nearby.||||Breakfast was nice, nothing special though. More than enough to get our bellies full for a long day ahead.||||The Meteoras were beautiful, and the one day we spent here weren't enough to try all the activities. We will definitely be back and will be choosing Guesthouse...
