Porto Maltese is a charming boutique hotel located in the heart of Agios Nikolaos, Crete. The hotel is unusual as it feels like it is made up of several houses however it offers stunning views of the town's harbor, Lake Voulismeni, and the Kri-kri islet.

The hotel has 18 rooms and suites, all of which are decorated in a bit shabby chic style. The rooms are equipped with all the basic amenities you need for a comfortable stay, including air conditioning and free Wi-Fi.

The staff at Porto Maltese are friendly and helpful, and they are always happy to make recommendations for things to see and do in the area. The hotel is also located unbelievably central within walking distance of many of Agios Nikolaos's most popular attractions, including the Venetian harbor, Lake Voulismeni, and the Archaeological Museum.

Pros Friendly and helpful staff Beautifully shabby chic rooms Absolute perfect location Rooftop terrace with stunning views

Cons Noise from rooftop bars nearby (take ear plugs if staying on a weekend) Shower not overly powerful

Overall Porto Maltese is an excellent value for the money, especially if you plan to be out and about all day. The hotel is located in a great location, the staff are friendly and helpful, and the rooms are decorated quaintly. If you are looking for a charming and affordable place to stay in Agios Nikolaos, Porto Maltese is a great option.

Tips If you are planning on staying on a weekend, be sure to bring earplugs to block out the noise from the rooftop bars. The hotel does not have a restaurant, so you will need to eat out for all of your meals. There are many great restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. The hotel is located in a very walkable area, so you can easily explore Agios Nikolaos on foot. However, if you want to explore the surrounding countryside, you may want...

Very interesting cozy centrally located hotel. Warning, many stairs. Also must be careful to get in writing, confirmation of the exact room you have been promised. We were a couple, and a friend, so needed 2 rooms, next to each other preferably. Why we booked early. We booked the 2 honeymoon suites with balcony on the top floor, 1 year before arrival. 2 weeks before our arrival we emailed hotel to inform them of our arrival time and to confirm our reservation for the 2 honeymoon suites with balcony on the top floor. We received confirmation email confirming our reservation for the 2 honeymoon suites with balcony and that they were on the top floor. The day we arrived we, the couple were given as confirmed, one of the honeymoon suites with balcony on the top floor. Our friend was put in a room in another wing of the hotel in a room with no balcony. She couldn't have been any further away from us the way the hotel is setup. We immediately talked to the receptionist, showed her our emails confirming our reservation and that our friend did not get the honeymoon suite with balcony on the top floor that she had booked, paid for, and was confirmed multiple times by hotel. She told us the owner would talk to us in the morning. In the morning he offered to move our friend to the room down the hall to ours, however it was not the honeymoon suite, as they had given it to a longer term renter. Nothing we could do but accept, at least our friend was close to us and happy with the new room. He also gave us free breakfast for the last 2 days of our stay. We appreciate his effort in trying to right this wrong, but does not change the fact that he did not honour our confirmed reservation in order to accept a longer...

A hotel is only as good as its staff, and Damos, Dorothea and Marianna couldn't be more helpful, or attentive. Nothing was too much trouble for them.

The hotel is very centrally located. Cafes, shops and bars are on the doorstep. The lake is a two minute stroll, and Kitroplateia beach a similar distance.

The Porto Maltese isn't like any hotel I have stayed in before. It's in an old harbour side residence and is full of character. The rooms all seem to be different and have AC. I would definitely recommend a sea view with a balcony, but that's just my preference. I love the view. The only drawback is, you can get noise late at night from the bars around the port and people making their way home. It's probably nothing a few drinks or earplugs wouldn't put right. I should add that we were there during the Orthodox Easter Celebrations, so that could account for some of the noise. It was definitely quieter after the weekend.

The rooms were spotless, the bed very comfortable, and the bedding very good quality. Toiletries are also provided. There are a lot of steps to the main entrance of the hotel, but it can also be accessed from a street at the rear. If you have mobility issues it would be a consideration.

Would I stay here again? In a...

Absolute delight this place. Sadly booked for just one night, wish it had been for longer if only to benefit more from the view out over the bay and the lake. George, the proprietor, was very helpful on arrival but due to us being quite early, suggested a couple of places for lunch whilst our room was being cleaned. One we returned we headed to our room to find virtually a suite with 2 good sized rooms, one with a table and additional seating to the rear and the front one with a good sized balcony having far reaching views. Furnished with a bistro seating set we enjoyed an hour on the balcony drinking the complimentary wine George supplied. The room/s have a comfy double bed, sink, TV with dvb box, strong WiFi and a small desk and chair. Bathroom has an acceptable shower with toilet. Hand washing is done in a basin in the bedroom. We really enjoyed our one night here, at what I considered a bargain price. One thing, if you're a little bad on your feet, it's all steps at the hotel, so bear that in mind. Parking is available for free, just ask on arrival.

Really nice little hotel in the absolute perfect location in Agios Nikolaos. Very friendly staff too! We had the Maltesen suite, and even if it is small, we family of five fitted very well. The little balcony overlooking the port was lovely. There are three balconies besides each other so it is not completely private, did not bother us😊 You will find minimarket near, and a free parking only 100 meters away from the hotel, and a lovely beach with many good restaurants only 150m away, where you will find lovely breakfast and dinner. At the hotel there are stairs and no elevator. We were in October which is already low season ( perfect warm weather and warm sea❤️), and there is music playing from near night club every night until 24.00, which you can hear on the balcony, but not inside if you close the balcony door, however this did not bother us at all, but we guess that in high season it might be noisier? There is air conditioning, and many windows to open, and get the sea breeze in. When we come back, we hope to stay in this hotel❤️
