If you prefer the sound of cicadas singing, roosters crowing, and horses neighing to the hustle and bustle of the port, head here as fast as you can. The Nereids is the perfect location, about 10 minutes from the port through narrow alleys until the lanes open up to a larger street that is bordered by beautiful trees and is close to excellent tavernas. Past the Nereids, it looks like the road winds up into the mountains and into a walking track, although we never went up that way. We could see horses resting nearby. The owner greeted us warmly as our horse and mule pulled up with our luggage (We pulled our luggage down the moderate hill when we left.) He showed us to our room, which was up a few steps on the street and positioned next to the courtyard. It looks like a newer addition but built in the traditional style. The room was huge, with a comfortable bed and pillows. Gorgeous wood beams highlighted the wood ceiling, and stone walls added charm. You can keep the windows closed or swing open the shutters and let the breeze in. It was hot, so we ran the air conditioning, but we could still hear the cicada chorus which I absolutely loved. I felt like we were miles from anywhere at the Nereids. The room included a small refrigerator, an electric kettle with resupplied Nescafe sticks and creams, a metal tray with coffee spoons and a knife, and resupplied bath products. A hair dryer is in the bathroom. We had one chair to sit in, so hubby perched on the bed to read or watch TV. Everything was spotless. After our second night, our bed was stripped and housekeeping left a new top sheet and coverlet for us to place on the bed, as is what is expected at many Greek guest houses and hotels. As I mentioned, good tavernas are close, so you don't have to search for good food. When you return from dinner, make sure you have a small light source as the key hole is hard to find since there is little illumination at the door. A bush next to the door blocks what little light there is. Of course, a light is good for navigating the alleys as you explore the town anyway. Not everyone picks up after their dogs and horses, and you don't want any surprises on your shoe. The Nereids is an excellent choice to stay and we will absolutely...
Read moreSo nice to be tucked away from the tourist crowds but just a short walk to anything in town. We had a warm welcome and a hand with the bags up (and up and up) to our room, one of the two (#8 and #9) on the top floor. The climb was worth it for the breezes and the views, and the shared terraces were never crowded if we wanted to eat breakfast or relax onsite in the evenings. Really a perfect choice. ||If you continue climbing past the guesthouse, there is a good path up to a cemetery and onward to the Agia Matronas monastery for some spectacular views. Wear good shoes, but it's really not too strenuous, and you'll pass hardly another soul. The more popular walks along the coast to Mandraki in one direction and as far as Plakes in the other are also...
Read moreA beautiful guest house five minutes from the bustle of the port. Our room was very comfortable and clean and well equipped. (small bathroom but perfectly adequate). Our room had a double aspect of the mountains and the sea. We loved the variety of terraces which any residents can use. Note there are 56 steps up to room 8 but it's cheaper than going to the gym! The hosts were always available and nothing was too much trouble. Nereids gives 10% discount on breakfast at Isalos - not the cheapest for breakfast but the food was very good. On our penultimate day we discovered the bakeries in town and opted for a croissant and coffee. Lovely to lie in bed and listen to the cockerels, donkeys and birdsong. Felt very refreshed after...
