My wife and I with our 6 month old made a booking in to Magas hotel 8 months before checking in. For a 130 euro a night hotel, I was vastly dissapointed. Especially as this is realistically just a 1 star hotel.
Is this hotel suitable for families? No, the reason being is that there is no space outside to park a rented car. The entrance is also swamped with mopeds and quad bikes with no space to manoeuvre a buggy. Even though we booked this hotel 8 months in advance and informed them that we had a baby, we were given a room at the top of some very steep shallow steps. Lugging a buggy up and down stairs daily was tiring.
One of my biggest issues was the shower. Hands down this is the worst shower that I have ever used. The actual shower base is probably about 60cm and the taps are badly designed. Not only is the basin so tiny but the tap protudes so much from the wall that is takes up about a third of the basin space and you are constantly hitting your lower back against it. To add insult to injury, the shower curtain doesn't even go all the way down. There's approximately a 30cm gap from the bottom. This means that the bathroom gets absolutely drenched as water escapes and goes everywhere. Washing our 6 month old in a tiny shower base whilst trying to get into some sort of squad position proved incredibly tiring and painful. It's an accident waiting to happen. Also worth mentioning that the toilet basin was dripping constantly throughout the length of our stay.
Is the location to the town centre good? Yes and No. It may only be a 10 minute walk from the town centre but walks don't get much harder then this one. At points the gradient is ridiculously steep. Also these roads are tremendously dangerous with low visibility due to corders and extremely narrow roads. Combine this with a bunch of underage drunk youths driving crazily on mopeds and you've got yourself one big disaster waiting to happen.
Pros The breakfast is actually much better quality then the stated continental breakfast it says it provides. There are a large variety of options. There is also an included transfer to and from the airport. Let's be honest Mykonos is one big rip off for accomodation. Even at €130 a night, this is one of the cheapest around the town centre
I'm a nutshell, you can't do alot better for price in regards to the location during peak season. Sadly if you do have little children, this is not for you. If you are young, want to rent a moped and do not care about basic hotel standards then this is for you.
On a separate note, I would even go as far as to say avoid Mykonos altogether if you have children. We struggled to manoeuvre around the narrow cobbled streets with a buggy and I found that everyone was quite rude around buggys. People barging through with a lack of etiquette and manners including smoking in your baby's face seems to be norm wherever you go. If you take a ferry to the island of Tinos it's much more...
Read moreOur experience with the Magas Hotel was excellent from the start. I booked because of free transportation to the port and to the airport. We walked off of the ferry and were greeted by a hotel representative and were whisked directly to the hotel. Check in was a breeze and we were in our room within 20 minutes after arrival. Room is small but clean quiet with small balcony overlooking a courtyard. Beds are comfortable and WIFI is OK. I was surprised by the nice breakfast that is included. Coffee, tea, cereal, eggs (fried, scrambled and boiled, breakfast meats, cheese, feta, yogurt, breads, pastries, jams, fruit etc. served in a nice room or you can eat in the courtyard. Our flight was leaving at 16:00 so our transfer was at 14:00. As they were closing for the season we were transferred to their sister hotel The Poseidon at 10:30. This is a very nice hotel with a lounge and pool area which we were given full access. I can only say that those who complained about this hotel either don’t travel or are incapable of realizing what a bargain this place is. We paid $61 per night and received 2 transfer (by taxi @€25 each) plus breakfast ( restaurants in town charge between €10 -€15 Per person.) Based on my calculations that’s about €80 saving. How can you complain about that. BTW Mykonos sucks.....expensive,...
