Do not stay here. Especially if you’re a girl travelling on your own. I stayed in this hostel because it was cheap and half way between the main town (pana doc) and the language school I was attending. Maybe a 5 min walk up the extremely steep hill. As it is shoulder season in San Pedro, there are not many people in town. As such, my friend and I lucked out by booking the 5 bed dorm room but having it entirely to ourselves for the whole time. If I had been on my own, I would have left on the second day. Here’s why:
Twice during our stay the male cleaner barged into our room before 7:30am to “wipe down the sofa”. It’s not like he was actually cleaning the ensuite bathroom or doing something helpful (which would still be a wildly inappropriate time to do so in the morning) but he literally came in both times just to wipe down the leather sofa with spray and wipe, both times using his key and not knocking or announcing himself. My friend wasn’t completely dressed the first time when he barged in and we both were just in shock and stood there unsure what he was doing.
Then again this morning (our check out day) he came in using his key (without knocking or announcing himself) at 6:55am!!!! It is a Sunday, check out time is at 11am, and he came in at 6:55am - again allegedly to “wipe down the sofa”. This does not seem like a task that has to be completed at 6:55am. My friend was in bed asleep and I had just gotten up to use the bathroom when he came in, that didn’t deter him. This is completely unacceptable. This man is creepy and weird and it’s made us both feel incredibly unsafe and uncomfortable - especially as they know we are the only two people in the hostel (it’s on the giant board downstairs). Reception for the hostel isn’t even open at that time so I don’t know if they are aware this creepy man is letting himself into the dorms at 6:55am on the weekend.
In addition to this horror, here are some other things that made the stay awful. when the staff start work around 6am they blast music/tv shows as loud as possible which echo up the open plan stairwell and wake the entire building up. Every day.
The icing on the cake is there has been no hot water at all during our stay. So, please save your...

Additionally , the rooms are not soundproof at all from the excessive noise on the street that occurs at all hours. The icing on the cake is there has been no hot water at all during our stay so please, save your...
Read moreAn extremely weird experience. We got terrible service and the rooms are loud and dirty. Bathroom also dirty plus I’m pretty sure the “electric” shower head shocked me when I touched it to adjust (good thing I was wearing rubber flip flops).
When we checked in, the staff first showed us a private double room (we had two beds in a 10 bed dorm). When we said this isn’t what we booked he took us to a 5 bed dorm that doesn’t have curtains. We asked if there was anyone else staying in the room and he said no. Satisfied we accepted the different room but 5 minutes later he came in and said we need to go to another room (did not explain why he first brought us to this room). In the new room our beds didn’t have sheets so we asked numerous times for bedsheets and blankets. After many hours we realised he had left without giving us sheets. We ended up taking bed sheets from other beds 😣
Also the the room window opens to a very busy road. Even with it closed it was impossible to sleep past 7am with all the road noise and shops...
