Casa Madera is a beautiful property and very chill. It is laid-back and has a good hostel-like vibe. There is a kitchen if you want it, and the people working their when I showed up were great. Loved the hangout area on the second floor with mattresses and hammocks. My room was simple, of course, but my bed was quite comfortable. The walls between the rooms are just planks, so you will be able to hear a lot. This is the one downside overall. The bathrooms and common areas were kept clean. The barking of the dogs around the hotel at night was often incessant and very loud. Next door, the man on the church loudspeaker started yelling nice and early one morning...twice! There's only so much the property can do about this, but it's good to...

The personnel was nice and the check in was done quickly.

The private double room without bathroom was big and clean. But the bathroom was down the stairs and I mean downs too many stairs ! It was actually stressful to go to the bathroom.

During the day time they don’t have enaugh water for the shower, so you need to be sure to plan when you want to have a shower, also knowing there is only 2 toilets and 2 showers for everyone..

The rooftop/smoking area is up to so many other stairs !

The noise … if you don’t have earplug you cannot sleep, it is simple as this. There is so so many dogs barking at time, all night long. And I am not talking about the chickens.

We cannot really recommend this place as we did...

I had a great stay at Casa Madera! It’s a family-owned place with a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. The kitchen is well-equipped, making it easy to cook your own meals. The open space area is really nice to hang out in, and everything is always kept very clean—without the use of strong chemicals, which I really appreciate.

The bunk beds are comfortable, and the vibe here is calm and respectful. It’s not a party hostel, so if you’re looking for a peaceful place, this is perfect. The staff is super flexible and accommodating, which made my stay even better. Plus, the hot showers were a great bonus!

Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a cozy and well-maintained place to stay....

This could be such a nice place and perhaps once was. Really cool building with lots of levels overlooking the river - unfortunately smelly and full of litter. However the family who run it are disinterested in all guests and actually quite rude. On the day of departure they asked me to pay again I told them I had already and still needed change then they all went out and I didn't get my change. There are different levels with a few hammocks but everywhere is not made pretty and is a bit messy with kids toys thrown around. But it's probably the cheapest place in san marcos at 150Q per night.

The room we stayed in (3-bed) was very basic and the beds not the best. Okay for the very cheap price though. The roof top terrace is where you will be spending most of the time anyway and it makes more than up for the rooms. From here you get a great view on the lake, there's hammocks and matraces to chill and you can bring your own drinks! One of the coolest places we've stayed in central America!

Our stay at Casa Madera was better than we could have imagined! It's best described as a mix between a hostel and a homestay. Israel and his lovely family make you immediately feel at home and are very welcoming and always up for a chit-chat with the guests. The view from the terrace is amazing. We extended our stay and made this our home at Atitlan for a week. Gracias por todo!
