It was our 3rd time staying here and will probably be our last.
I LOVE that the resort has gone plastic bottle free That's amazing! We really enjoyed Sai and her warm hospitality, George for his friendly personality, Andrea for making us feel welcome and special since it was our wedding trip and Freddy for always giving us amazing service at breakfast and lunch. Johnny and Marvin are super friendly as well. The bartenders were amazing this trip, always joking around with us. The location is excellent! Can't beat West Bay Beach! Gula is definitely worth trying. We struggled with our server because he didn't speak any English but he tried and had great serving skills and the food was incredible!
However, sadly HM needs to address some issues before we would ever consider returning. The front desk...we reserved rooms a yr prior and were told they were confirmed. Just like every other year we've stayed there, it's been a battle to get the room we reserved and paid for. I'm tired of that battle. Once a day a guy comes out in a hazmat suit and uses "THE FOGGER". Everyone must grab their stuff and run to their rooms to avoid inhaling the chemicals his suit is protecting him from. I'd prefer the au natural bugs than the chemicals thanks. In the lounge chairs, on the beach should be a NO SMOKING section. If a smoker wants to light up, they should be forced to take a walk. Not only are children and nonsmokers having to breathe in their smoke but then the smokers sometimes toss their butt onto the beach. I have no idea why no one is enforcing this. This stay, a very large group of Honduran bank associates came to stay for 3 days. They refused to wait in lines for food or drinks. When confronted, they just bullied their way to the front. Again, no staff did anything about it. The quality of the entertainment staff is not what it used to be. Years ago we loved the shows and I can see that some talent is there but their hearts just aren't in it like before. Even beach volleyball was ruined by one of the female staff members when she broke up our family and friends that were a team to stack it "guys against girls". How is that fun for anyone? Some of us just left the court that day, eventhough we'd been looking forward to playing together for months. We are scuba divers but DO NOT dive with the dive shop at HM. It's called TGI and unless you're French Canadian and love a jam packed dive boat, do yourself a favour and go elsewhere for diving. We use Mayan Divers next door.
I still give HM 3 stars for location, nice clean pools, good security, decent food and some amazing staff members.
However, if we booked a year in advance for our wedding trip, brought 30 people with us, made a contact with someone in guest relations in order to try our best to ensure our guests got the rooms they reserved and we STILL had to fight for our rooms for 45 mins upon check in??? That really makes us question if we should recommend...
Read moreThis is by far the worst place we have been to in the Caribbean, for someone that makes a Caribbean trip 2-3 times per year I will never go back to this place even if it was given to me for FREE. This is the place where their regulations put handcuffs on all the employees and they are always looking to see if you will mess up. This is the place of “está prohibido” ( it’s not permitted) saying. This is their employees most used frase. *Está prohibido have hand towels in the room unless you call the front desk every day for them to leave some in. *Esta prohibido to take food to your room because is more work for their employees even if you are not feeling well and your wife wants to take some soup to make you feel better. *Esta prohibido to visit their gym from the hours of 12-3 because I think their employees take a break during that time. *Esta prohibido to go to the swimming pool after 6pm because there are no employees available and their excuse was that they put chlorine at that time and can be harmful. Esta prohibido to call a taxi to pick you up from the lobby to go to the city. We were only allowed to use their own transportation that was way overpriced. So to get a taxi we had to walk to the entrance of their property (about 1/2 mile) with 2 senior citizens to be able to get a taxi. Esta prohibido to have a drink in the pool. Esta prohibido to have more than 2 drinks in one seating at the bar. ( They have a big sign stating that at the bar)
When we got there, the AC was not working and they send someone to fix it but later on I called because their bathroom smelled so bad like backed up sewer but they were not able to get it fixed so we had to stay there 6 days with that smell. I also called them to get the TV fixed and their employee came to fix it and told me that we had the wrong remote and that he will comeback to fix it but never did. Esta prohibido to have good cup of coffee by the lobby for free. Each cup of coffee cost $2. ( so much for all inclusive)
I felt that their employees are trained to police their guest and not to Serve them. I suggested to one of the guest service managers to take their team to ANY place in Cancun so they can see what good service looks like.
The day we left, we arranged transportation with the hotel and they were 40 minutes late and when we were on the the way to the airport, the taxi driver got a call from the hotel telling him that they were not going to pay for his trip. So he asked us to pay him $20 but I refused and called a family member that was still at the hotel to straighten this up. This driver stopped twice in the middle of the road to talk to the hotel and he was not happy.
Please DO NOT go to this place expecting good service of great facilities, and they need a serious remodel to get with the...
Read moreIt’s never a good sign when a resort doesn’t ask for feedback and their staff don’t wear name tags. However, there are a few things to love about Henry Morgan and a lot of the rest depends on your expectations. We are a couple who booked a week in the ‘suites’ which are converted self-catering/apartment units at the back of the resort. First, to love: the staff (except the front desk). Consistently helpful and friendly. The animation team is the best we’ve ever seen. With minimal resources, they put on a good show every evening, Zumba’d the heck out of us and generally kept things lively. The food is very high quality (come early) and the house Italian wine surprisingly good. Yes, it would be nice to have some more variety and a theme night or two. Go for fresh donuts (better than Tim’s) at 4 pm at the main pool bar. The beds were comfortable and the unit while ‘tired’, was clean and spacious. The resort location is good with walking options to nearby restaurants (Beachers seafood=excellent value) and snorkeling at the south end. Bananarama down the beach has a good Happy Hour. The wine shop (with a few tables and espresso machine) is a nice getaway. The beach is good but not particularly wide and can get crowded.
OK, now the challenges. WiFi ($20/wk) is intermittent and low bandwidth. Keep your logon details. Avoid the suites rooms. They are not worth the surcharge as most of the extra space is wasted, the second pool is really only good for children, the pool bar there is limited and the suite’s floor tiles are a slipping hazard. The Gula specialty restaurant is a mystery. You can only go once but it was half empty every time we looked. Generally, there are not enough wait staff in the main dining room and you are largely on your own to get coffee/beverages. The porch would be a nice idea if it didn’t sit next to the driveway and the diesel buses coming in every morning. Flies are a nuisance. However, the nightly fogging with insecticide is a bigger health risk. Go the beach to avoid this at sunset and enjoy the view! Beware of cruise days because the resort sells $20 passes for non-guests who can take up all the loungers – get one before 10 am. Bring: Kleenex, your own facecloth (not white), insect repellent for legs at night, snorkel gear, bathroom amenities. This resort would compare to a 4-star Cuba/Dominican Republic resort with slightly better food. 3 stars on most...
