We had such an amazing experience it is difficult to describe in words how much we enjoyed it, but I'll try.
We arrived in Karan's at about 15.00 and our tour guide Ramesh was already expecting us with his Jeep ready to depart. We left Jaisalmer behind us and reached our first destination, Khuldara. This is an ancient town that was suddenly abandoned for reasons that remain unknown, though several theories surround it. It is a good idea to read a bit about it before you go there. It is not very big, but it's a very interesting archeological site and we were able to take beautiful pictures there.
After stopping for this visit, we went deeper into the desert and it was fascinating to see how the landscape kept on changing. Farms, sheep, rural schools, men riding their camels and the bright smile and kind wave we got every time a local saw us in the back of the Jeep. We were finally at the place where our camel ride began, and where we met our other local guide who would join our crew of now 4 people (yes, we were lucky enough to have a private tour!).
It is important to highlight that camels were beautifully taken care of, we even saw the man brush them with love very early in the morning, and that we felt safe and reassured at all times. The most challenging part is getting on and off, remember to hold on tight! We rode into the desert for around 45 minutes until we reached the campsite, just in time to see the sunset behind the dunes while drinking a delicious cup of hot masala chai cooked right there, in the fire. What a magical sunset! It will not be erased from our memories any time soon. We took a walk and were able to observe the diverse fauna of the place, birds, beetles, and even antelopes!
When we went back to the campsite dinner was already in the making: chips, pakora, white rice, and mixed rice and a delicious dal. Freshwater was provided at all times. The guides kept the spirit up telling jokes and indulging us with a very nice conversation about their country and customs. Unlike other tours who make you sleep on the floor (and boy are those beetles big!), they made a bed for each of us under the stars and the moon, in the middle of the dunes. It was dreamy, but just because I tend to get a little chilly at night, I chose the tent which they also offered us. I slept like a baby, just watching the desert sky and melting into the infinite view. They offered to wake us up for sunrise, and not only they did, but also brought us masala chai to our bed so we could enjoy it even more. Breakfast included toasts, biscuits, fresh fruit and some kind of sweet preparation whose name I don't remember now that was my absolute favorite! We rode back in our camels again for about 30 minutes, this time while watching the sun go up. Then to the jeep, and back to Jaisalmer. Ramesh is also the best DJ ever I must say and will play desert and Punjabi music to set the mood. All in all, the thing I liked best is how genuine the experience felt. I recommend to anyone interested in a frugal experience where you have real contact with...
Read moreWe took the Thar desert safari tour in early October. It was an incredible and highly recommended experience. Though I believe words will not be enough to reflect the marvelous time we had, I will try to detail our experience here.
The jeep picked us up at 3:30 pm because it is at that time that the sun and heat become tolerable. The first stop was in the ghost town of Kuldhara, a place that was suddenly uninhabited a couple of centuries ago for unknown reasons so far, which is why it has a reputation for being cursed. We stayed there for a few minutes admiring the archeological remains and taking some photos. Then we went back to the jeep until we reached the desert itself: the total journey took about an hour with a landscape full of houses made of sandstone, cows, goats, sheep, camels, and windmills. This is where the guides and the camels were waiting for us to undertake the last part until we reached our final destination, the desert camp. We rode one camel each for an hour, it was a very pleasant and calm ride and we were lucky enough to spot a few antelopes. When we got to the camping area we enjoyed the sunset sitting in the dunes of the Thar while drinking a delicious chai masala. Shortly after, dinner was ready. For starters, they served some snacks and very tasty local fritters. Dinner consisted of rice, spicy dal, and flatbreads, everything fresh, rich in flavor, and made at the moment. At all times we were provided with bottled water, the only thing we chose to drink, although they were also kind enough to offer us sodas or beer before the trip.
After having dined and a nice chat, it was time to go to bed, and we had the option to choose between a warm bed under the stars or a tent. While the night was not cold we opted for the tent to feel more sheltered and have a little more privacy.
The next day we woke up at 6 AM to enjoy the sunrise while drinking hot chai in bed. We ate a very nutritious breakfast and rode the camels once again, this time for a 40-minute ride until we reached the jeep that brought us back to Jaisalmer at around 10 AM.
Overall, the experience feels genuine and is highly recommended, the service is excellent and the treatment received from the employees is fabulous, their dedication and attention to detail must not be disregarded. Thank you so...
