Hotel Pergola (Amalfi) What a “GEM”
We booked Hotel Pergola in Amalfi for a week in order to attend my son’s “destination wedding”. 14 of us stayed here for a week.
Hotel La Pergola’s location is close to Amalfi city center (i.e., main strip close to harbor, ferries and buses). Easy commute…and the bus line has a stop in front of the hotel/restaurant (i.e.,La Terrazza dei Limoni). We commuted between Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento using a single bus line. Bus was only 2.90 Euro per trip.
The hotel and restaurant are owned and run by Mama Rita and her son Daniele, who is also the Chef. They are both hands-on. You will enjoy Daniele’s meals as well as Mama Rita’s cooking and pastry skills. The morning breakfast buffet includes both European and American cuisine. Scrambled eggs and bacon for the American tourist, along with cheese, meats, cereal, fresh breads, yogurts and organic fruits and vegetables from the very own garden. Freshly squeezed orange juice and Cappuccino started each of our days. Food was so fantastic for both the breakfast buffet and our dinner at their La Terrazza dei Limoni restaurant.
Chef Daniele provided us an exceptional and oftentimes unique dining experience. He and his staff were able to create and often times modify menu items to meet our large group’s culinary taste from his scratch kitchen….and with 14 people eating together….he handled the task in a superior manner. All 14 people in the group enjoyed the meals so much, we chose to end our day with meals at our hotel….it was so good.
I was personally impressed by Walter and Angelo…for managing and arranging the restaurant so that 14 of us could eat breakfast and dinners together. They always provided our group with an exceptional dining experience every time. Be sure to try their Limoncello, made by Daniele. It is by far the best we have tasted on this trip to Italy. Forgot to mention, you’ll enjoy sipping the Limoncello or Limoncello spritz on their terrace overlooking their lemon trees and the Salerno Gulf on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Our group is already buying bottles of their Limoncello to take back to the USA and Germany.
Salvatore and Mario, two of the Hotel staff, met our travel needs by ordering cabs - so that we could get to the destination wedding on time - to parking our vehicles in their garage for us.
The most important thing about Hotel Pergola/La Terrazza Dei Limoni is that it truly is a family business. Although, through my personal contact I’m only mentioning a few by name, but everyone at the hotel treat each other like family members.
The entire staff treated our family of 14 like family members.

Location. If you are spending a few days on the coast, you’ll want to base yourself in one place, that is a hub for the ferries and buses, so that you can make it to other parts on the coast relatively painlessly each day. Amalfi town is one such place. Within Amalfi town, you could find accommodations within the town, which would likely entail steps and winding streets. Or you could find yourself a place like Hotel La Pergola, which is right at a bus stop on the route between Amalfi and Positano/Sorrento, just a short ride out of Amalfi, which means you don’t have to deal with steps and getting lost with all your luggage. When you want to head out on adventures, a short bus ride into Amalfi town will get you started, for you to catch a ferry or bus to anywhere on the coast. For us, we skipped the bus and enjoyed the 25-min spectacular walk into town each day.
Breakfast. What a reason to get up each day. Breakfast doesn’t seem to be a strength at the average albergo in Italy. Hotel La Pergola is an exception that lays out all the works. Hams, cheeses, yogurts, sfogliatelle, at least half a dozen cakes, fruits and vegetables from their own garden. Maybe I shouldn’t say this, but all the makings were there for me to pack a little sandwich each day, which would turn out to be the food of the gods when I had it at the end of a divine hike in the natural splendour of the coast.
Mamma Rita. How hasn’t anyone spoken about Mamma Rita, the mother of the place, who bustles about in colour and cuteness. She makes all the cakes and teaches the cooking class, and just makes the place joyful.
The people. Somehow, they’ve hit on a magic formula here where everyone on the team is a genuinely great person who will help us with anything. Whatever advice they gave us, we trusted. And what a pleasure to watch the sunset on the terrace with them and their lemon spritzes. A shout out to Mamma Rita, Daniele, Salvatore, Raffaele, Angelo, Walter, Mario, the beautiful cuoca, the cheerful cleaning ladies, and others whose names we didn’t learn.
I hope you all get a chance to experience this...
Read moreWhen we pick hotels for our travels in Italy, we typically pick 3 star hotels (based upon price and service levels) that have 5 star reviews. We chose Hotel La Pergola in Amalfi and it earned a 5 star review from us.||The room was clean, spacious, cheerful and inexpensive. I would describe it as charming and the staff was first rate. |Parking is available for Euro15 at the hotel (they squeeze you into the garage built into the building). This is important since there is no street parking nearby - which is typical of the entire Amalfi coast. I am not certain if you have to reserve parking but i would have if we were not traveling offseason. Our room had an attached private balcony that was larger than the room itself (estimate 25 ft by 20 ft); we did not get to enjoy it as much as we would have liked as we were staying only 1 night but it was great for the time we had.|The view is good but not spectacular - the hotel is on an inward turn which means you get to see the Mediterranean but also see some of the mountain and roadway. Hotels with the panoramic view were way more expensive. The hotel is outside town (say 5 minutes by car) and you will need to pay for parking in town when you go to walk around. Hotels in town, again, were much more expensive.|We ate at the hotel restaurant based upon the many reviews we had seen on tripadvisor - it turned out to be one of the best meals during out 2 week Italy trip and the prices were very reasonable. Everyone's dinner was delicious and the service was top flight - think 5 star NYC restaurant.|I also purchased 2 bottles of their homemade Limoncello based upon some of the tripadvisor reviews and my wife and daughter wished I had bought more since it was so flavorful.||This is a must stay during your trip to Amalfi - Excellent service, inexpensive and a...
