We stayed at the Hilton Rome Airport hotel after arriving on an overnight flight from Atlanta. It was extremely convenient for a pre-cruise stay the night before our cruise. The room itself was very nice and was recently renovated. Be sure to book a "deluxe" room, as this is code for "renovated." It's slightly more expensive, but not by a lot. The shower/bath combo in the room was especially nice, as it included a rainfall shower head and a bathtub large enough to take a nice, soaking bath in.
The hotel was also very convenient to the airport because you can reach it by a covered walkway. It's about a 15 minute walk from the airport terminal, though, which of course includes pushing all your luggage, so be prepared for some exercise. If you're not relatively young and mobile, it could be a difficult walk.
The check in process was honestly the low point of our entire experience. There's a priority check-in line for people who have a high status level with Hilton, but 90 percent of people have to check in at the regular check in area. We waited in line for 45 minutes to check in, which was not fun at all because we were so exhausted and hungry after a 10-hour flight. There was only one single employee checking people in from the regular line and one employee checking people in from the priority line. If you were in the priority line, you might wait 5 minutes, but we and the vast majority of others waited for 45 minutes or even longer. There was also no room to form a line, so it ended up going out the door, which meant that the people in the back of the line had to wait outside. It was a pretty terrible process. We arrived early in the afternoon around 1:30, which I imagine is when many people arrive from overnight flights. I would think the hotel could anticipate the rush of people checking in at this time and have more employees working so the line moved much faster. Also, there was no option to check in online. I tried several times, but my credit card was declined each time. I had no issues with the same card upon arriving at the hotel.
The food was kind of hit and miss. We ate in the main restaurant there twice - once when we arrived, and once for breakfast the following morning. The lunch was pretty underwhelming and strangely enough didn't feature much Italian food at all. The breakfast buffet the following morning, however (which does cost 24 Euros per person), was actually incredibly good - probably the best I've ever seen in a hotel. There was a ton of food available, including some delicious real scrambled eggs, as opposed to the powdered kind you often see at buffets.
Overall, I'd recommend this hotel, but just be prepared for a long wait upon arriving. We arrived on a random Tuesday in late October - so, not exactly "high" season, but the wait to check in was unacceptably long. Other than that, the room was very nice, though, and the hotel is certainly convenient to...
Read moreLet down by the restaurant and dining. Whilst the hotel is fine, rooms are renovated and hotel staff are friendly this hotel is badly let down by the restaurant - and as its the only dining option, it impacts heavily on the experience of the hotel and the fact the hotel management keep allowing the restaurant operate so poorly really reflects the hotel overall.
During 2 stays at the hotel over a month there were multiple issues with the restaurant both times (and many are noted in other reviews so management should be fixing them):
BREAKFAST - Great spread, but replenishment was awful. After 9,30am (breakfast finishes 10.30am) expect lots of unfilled areas. At one point there was no bacon or sliced bread for 45 mins despite multiple people complaining - and even the bald tall restaurant manager standing next to both chatting with staff. Others have noted this in reviews.
ROOM SERVICE - Each order we had was wrong in some way and each time the staff taking the orders by phone were extremely rude, and when you tried to ask questions they pretended not to speak english (despite me seeing the same staff having full conversations in english in the restaurant). They just didn't care.
MENU VARIETY - The menu is small anyway but there is something for everyone, until that is the pizzas and pastas are removed and "not available". Seriously, on a menu of less than 10 things you can't remove 40% of the menu in a professional hilton restaurant.
OPENING TIMES - The opening times didn't match what was on the websites or apps. Lunch, we sat outside waiting for it to open at 12 - we were waiting 20 mins, staff walking past us (including the restaurant manager) until we realised they didn't open til 1. When I said to the manager it was wrong on the hotel app he just laughed - yeah, its hillarious we waited outside for 20 mins.
Whilst the food was fantastic the standard of service was terrible and multiple staff were rude.
There are many other reviews of both the restaurant and hotel that include many of these issues over a long period - so why on earth does the hotel general management address them.
The hotel is letting them down. I spend a lot of organising conferences across Europe and based on the restaurant experience I couldn't recommend the hotel due to the restaurant, and I'd tell all my conference connections the same.
Management - sort out the restaurant.
Other than that the hotel is comfortable, and hotel staff (excluding restaurant) were friendly and helpful. The management also needs to work with hotel security to improve safety in the connecting tunnels which do seem to have people sleeping rough and others that appeared to be...
Read moreOur experience at this hotel was awful. The staff were all extremely rude. The rooms felt similar to the quality of a much less expensive hotel.
We needed somewhere to stay for a short time between checking out of our downtown accommodations and our early flight. We arrived late morning and I asked about early check-in. The reception worker asked for my name and said our room was ready. She begins the check-in process including writing the room number on the key envelope. Then she asks for our passports. After seeing our US passports she says early check-in will cost 50 euros. We refused and said we were fine waiting a bit in the lobby. Meanwhile, while we waited we watched dozens of people check-in without any issues. I highly doubt all of them paid an additional 50 euros. Also, note that 2 hours later when I went to check-in, we were given the exact same room. So rather than allowing us access to the room, they let it sit empty for 2 hours. It isn’t as if they were giving the room that was ready to whomever was willing to pay extra. This seemed to be discriminatory against Americans.
In addition, when we finally checked in (with a different reception staff member) I waited while she checked in someone ahead of me with a non-American passport. She spent several minutes explaining the hotel, telling him about the restaurant, giving directions, etc. When I checked in, we were only told that they would be putting an additional hold on the card that wouldn’t be released until after check out. We weren’t even given directions to the elevator.
While we waited in the lobby for our room, my child leaned against me and fell asleep. A staff member was sent over to tell us that there was “no sleeping allowed in the lobby.” When we pointed out that she is a child, he said that it didn’t matter, that we needed to wake her up immediately. The next morning when we went to check-out there were two adults sleeping on sofas in the lobby.
At checkout I asked for a receipt, given the events of the previous day. I was told that she was unable to print a receipt, that instead they would email it to me. I asked her to email it now, while I waited so that I could check it. Two minutes later, she hands me a printed receipt.
I would not stay at this hotel again. It isn’t worth the cost and isn’t Hilton quality in service and...
