We found Residence Santa Cesarea met our needs perfectly in every way. We didn't want a cave hotel or one that was in the tourist-filled center of the Civita, yet we wanted to be within walking distance of all the major sites and of good restaurants. The Residence is a hybrid of a bed-and-breakfast (no restaurant, but a good breakfast spread which is included in the rate) and a boutique hotel (we had a spacious, modern, pleasingly decorated corner room with a modern bathroom and with great views over the Sassi and the Gravina canyon). It is in an old house whose interior has been modernized, and it has an elevator. There appear to be only 5 guest rooms, all on the third floor. The Residence is just a 10-15 minute walk from the Piazza Vittorio Venuto, heart of Matera's Civita, yet we were outside the touristy zone, so we enjoyed quiet nights, sleeping with the windows open and awaking to the sound of birds instead of Vespas. Our host, Francesco, was very kind and attentive to all our needs, and he suggested and made reservations for us at two excellent restaurants within an easy walk of the Residence that were not on the tourist route. His advice was generally very good (although we should not have taken his suggestion to take a taxi to Bari instead of the train; the highway is messed up with lots of construction and the traffic was nerve-racking). Our room rate at Residence Santa Cesarea was very reasonable and overall we were very pleased with the service and value...
Read moreThis is an excellent B&B. It is situated at the edge of the historical quarter of Matera in a beautiful 19th-century house which has recently been renovated. There are 5 rooms on the 3rd floor (there is a lift), four of which have a view of the Sassi. Prices vary according to whether, apart from the shower, you also want a bath. We had a very nice spacious room and bathroom with a view of the Sassi and a monastery. It was very quiet and well isolated. The room had all the mod cons and a small fridge with (free) drinks. Breakfast was a delight (after the rather meager breakfasts we had had in some other B&B’s) : a buffet with fresh fruit, cheeses and salamis, very tasty cakes , etc.||We chose to have the car put in a private garage (€ 15 a day, and € 5 for taking and bringing the car to the hotel), which spared us the hassle of looking for a parking space. During our 4-day stay we only needed it once, to go to the marvellous “La Cripta del Peccato originale”, which lies outside Matera.||We found the “staff” very helpful and friendly.||This was definitely the best B&B we stayed in during our holiday...
