I spent two days at Sanpeiso. We were looking for somewhere traditionally Japanese with good traditional food, but easy to reach from Tokyo by train. Atami is a very old spa town linked to Tokyo by Shinkansen but we took the Odoriko observation car train that reaches Atami in just over 90 minutes. The hotel is not too far from Atami station, but we took a taxi. The hotel is a collection of old buildings in its own wooded grounds: very much a contrast to the built-up area surrounding it. The service in the hotel is very traditional. Our rooms were on the ground floor with a large Japanese room for sleeping and eating, a smaller Japanese sitting room views across a larger wooded area of garden, a small private garden with terrace and, not to be overlooked, aa stone private bath filled from the local springs.||||The food is served in the traditional way in the rooms, with a charming lady bringing a succession of trays of beautifully presented dishes. I am not sure whether this is a traditional dish or the chef was experimenting to make a British guest feel at home, but it was excellent.||||After the meal we retreated to the sitting room and the futons were quickly made up and the screens put on the windows, so everything was done for us.||||In the morning breakfast is served in the room in the same way: lots of delicious small courses.||||After the dinner and breakfast I wasn't hunting around the next day for the nearest cake shop.||||The hotel also has two outside onsen baths which switch between male and female. Both had plenty of room, spring-fed pools in small gardens and, in the three days, I only ran into another...

A bit old-fashioned though you will be surprised if you find this Ryokan-hotel in a middle of city.||There is a supermarket...
