Wonderful Onsen Ryokan in small town of Atami. We stayed during the early cherry blossom season in February. We were seeking a property surrounded by nature with modern amenities and architecture but traditional rooms and overall experience. Soki exceeded our expectations in all areas.
Location: We used this hotel as a hub to explore the Izu peninsula from the nearby train station which is only 30 mins from Tokyo via the Shinkansen. We were able to take local trains to Odawara (20 mins) and Kawazu (45 mins), with several options for travel. Cabs were always available at the train station or at the hotel via the front desk within 10 minutes. We walked into town most days within 15 minutes from the hotel or train station.
Food: While we intended to eat off property each evening we decided to enjoy all the amenities the property offered and ended up eating 5 meals overall on property (2 dinners, 3 breakfasts). Overall we were very impressed how the menu evolved each day with a balanced and satisfying meal with various proteins, veggies, starches and something sweet. While dinners are comparable to a 1 michelin star meal (in quality and cost) with 7 courses, breakfasts were wonderful as well. Both meals had excellent seafood as you’d expect from a seaside hotel. Fish is cooked traditionally (heads on, over fire) and not de-boned. Pro, the fish taste and quality is excellent. Con, if you aren’t skilled with chop sticks you’ll have move slowly to avoid small bones. Despite this, we had no issues and it wasn’t any more difficult than eating any whole fish.
Rooms: Beds were comfortable and the rooms are perfectly designed for a traditional meets modern aesthetic. We enjoyed the in room private onsen most days and the public onsen once. Both are great but if you want privacy, get a room with an outdoor or semi-outdoor onsen as opposed to the smaller room which only has an indoor one. Having fresh air is much more enjoyable as the onsen tub water is constant and at a high temperature making the shower room very warm.
Service: Service was also exceptional, generally on the property and in the restaurants. Most employees spoke English which was helpful when asking questions about the food as we had allergies to be sensitive to. We enjoyed tea in the tea gallery overlooking the bay each afternoon and simple cocktails available (only a couple 2 part cocktail options, beer, wine or spirits).
Other thoughts: 95% of guests wore traditional robes provided by the hotel. We wore them while on property and thought they were fun and comfortable. Having almost all guests commit to the experience definitely added to ours.
Overall this hotel was the most memorable of our many trips to Japan over the years. If you’re looking for a more traditional experience but with luxury,...
Read moreThe hotel is located up in the hills in a residential area and is a calming and relaxing place throughout. As others have mentioned it is a minimalist environment and a lot of care and attention is placed on simplicity and wellness here. ||We enjoyed using the personal onsen located on our balcony and the room itself was spacious and set out perfectly given we had a toddler with us. The beds were large and we all enjoyed plenty of space to sleep. The toiletries were also of really good quality and we enjoyed wearing our pyjamas, every little thing was thought of.||The breakfasts were traditional Japanese so there was a lot of fish, miso soup and rice and pickles with vegetables, which was enjoyable for a short stay. There were also self service options where you could grab some fruit, yogurt and other dishes for breakfast so there is choice, but do not expect many western elements. ||We also struggled in obtaining milk for our toddler from the hotel during our first evening, luckily there was a seven eleven and a supermarket a short walk down the hill so we could buy some and keep in our fridge. Milk was available for him at breakfast times. ||There are not many restaurants nearby so when planning dinner it is best to ensure you have eaten elsewhere beforehand. We did also try the evening meal at the hotel on one occasion, it was nice with several components, but we did not think it was worth the amount charged when compared to other meals we enjoyed during our stay in Japan. ||Overall it was a very pleasant and relaxing stay in an environment that felt calm and which focused on Japanese elements, making the stay a rather...
Read moreI recently visited the Soki Atami Hotel, and while the hotel facilities are beautiful and well-maintained, I was thoroughly disappointed by the service at the hotel rooftop bar, "TEA SALON & BAR."
First, there were no menus available, which was surprising. When we politely asked the foreign staff member what drinks were being offered, we were hoping for some tea-related options according to the bar name - "Tea Salon & Bar". Instead, he laughed dismissively and told us there were no tea-related drinks or cocktails available. He the mentioned that tea is only served in the afternoon, but there were no signs or menus indicating this, leaving us completely in the dark.
As we tried to inquire about other drink options, he claimed that all beverages were sourced locally from Japan, except for one bottle of Spirit. However, that didn't seem to be the case based on what we observed. His attitude throughout our conversation was quite flippant, and when he handed us the bill, he tossed it over.
Despite there being a fireworks event that evening, we quickly finished our drinks, which cost over 1,200 yen, and left within a minute. This was, without a doubt, the worst service experience I have encountered in Japan. I hope management takes note of these issues to enhance the guest experience...
