This is my favorite retreat for the weekend from Tokyo. Atami is only 40 minutes away from Tokyo by Shinkansen. Taikanso is the authentic Japanese hot spring Ryokan, which was originally the country retreat of a Japanese steel tycoon. It is perched on the hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Izu islands. I particularly love the recently introduced suite room, consisted of a separate twin bed room, large Japanese tatami room, living space with comfortable sofa and cutting edge high-tech massage machine, as well as dedicated bathroom with wood bathtub and 100% pure hot spring water. The Japanese bathroom opens up to the wooden balcony with deck chairs. Everything is meticulously maintained and super clean. Bathroom has ample amenities. All rooms have wifi, which works nicely. Taikanso also has three different large public baths, where you can enjoy different atmosphere and scenery. If you have time, the large Japanese garden has flowers of seasons and a Japanese pond with beautiful carps, You can get free fish food from the front desk during the morning time. For dinner, you can enjoy very authentic Japanese course, Sushi course or Japanese top grade beef grill. As this is Japanese ryokan, you change into Japanese Kimono (Yukata) once you arrive and can move anywhere and enjoy dinner in Kimono (Yukata). So relaxing. If you want to relax more, you can arrange aroma massage as well as foot bath and steam bath. By prior arrangement Taikanso is running a shuttle bus from Atami station which is very handy. Hotel staffs are very well trained professionals and they tend to all your needs before you notice. All in all, this is the super weekend Japanese authentic retreat for relax, detox...

Read moreYou may have heard about ryokans, traditional Japanese inns. If you want to try a ryokan, Takanso is it (or at least one of the best ryokans in Japan).||||We stayed at Taikanso for our year-end family trip to Atami. As only one "special" room was available for our last-minute reservation, we stayed in a room quite spacious and open on the second floor. Kamois (lintels) between rooms, however, are low, so be very careful. Actually my elder son hit his head very hard against one of them. Ouch!||||Taikanso consists of many sukiya-style buildings on the mountainside, connected in a very complex way. You can easily get lost. This ryokan being half way up in the mountain, you can have a grand view of the city of Atami and the Sagami Bay from some of the guest rooms, its garden, and large common bathrooms. In particular, the sunrise on the sea is magnificent and something you do not want to miss. The next-day sunrise time is posted in the large common bathrooms.||||Dinners and breakfasts are major events during your ryokan stay and at Taikanso it is no exception. Some ryokans bring dinners and breakfasts to your room, but you have to come to the dining area (private dining rooms are available by reservation) for dinners and breakfasts at Taikanso. They prepare English menus only when there are foreign guests, so if you cannot read Japanese, you might want to request English menus at the time of your reservation. There is usually a pot (nabe) on top of a small fire place. Those pots are ready when the fire goes out.||||There is a pond in its garden, in which beautiful carp is swimming. You can get pellet-like baits at the souvenir shop for free and feed them only in...
