We stayed for two nights during the first week of November. The place and facilities were clean, though old - some of the fixtures such as one or two lighting points in the room were not working. We choose the option with breakfast, and the food provided was actually very tasty. ||||Bathing facilities are all shared, onsen-style, so for those who are not comfortable with the Japanese style of public bathing, you may want to take note. ||||However, the owners of this ryokan have absolutely no clue as to how to treat their guests. We arrived at 9:30pm, and the check in handled very brusquely, with very little information provided to us such as check out time and where all the facilities are located etc. We had to asked where the bathing and toilet facilities were located and were informed that we can only use the public bath up till 10pm. So we had to rushed to shower since there were no bathing facilities in the room. The man at the reception basically answered our questions in grunts. ||||During our last day, they came knocking at our room at 10am saying that we had to check out exactly at 10am. Hence we packed our bags and were at the lobby for check out by 10:15am. However, they insisted that we should pay 2000 yen for the 15 minutes of late check out. Note that we were the only customers staying there at the time, the rest of the guesthouse was empty, hence there was no real pressing need to be so strict about the adherence of the check out time. Subsequently when we refused to pay the 2000 yen (18 USD) for the late 15 minutes, they started abusing us verbally and one of the man at the reception counter actually moved to try to have my luggage and belongings removed from the lobby. ||||As we had rushed to pack to meet their check out time, our belongings were in a very disheveled state. I had to take another 5 minutes to put everything together while the owners/reception personnel were standing around me muttering curses all the time. When we finally stepped out of the guesthouse, the owner threw salt at us, which was a Japanese superstition to ward off unwelcomed guests or bad luck. ||||I have managed a backpackers hostel myself and we would never in our wildest dream treat our paying customers in such a shabby manner! ||||Based on the reviews here, it seems as though it is not the first time the owners have behaved in such atrocious manner, so I would definitely warned anyone interested to stay away from this ryokan. There are plenty of other options are the...
Read moreRyokan Nashimiya Onsen: Decent Onsen, Spacious Rooms (with a caveat!)Ryokan Nashimiya Onsen offers a decent onsen experience, providing a relaxing and traditional Japanese bathing experience. However, the rooms are quite large, which unfortunately made it difficult for the air conditioning to adequately warm the space. This could be a significant drawback, especially during colder months.Thankfully, the innkeeper went above and beyond to rectify the situation, providing a gas stove heater. This was a lifesaver and greatly improved the comfort of our stay. The innkeeper's helpfulness is definitely a strong positive point for this Ryokan. If you're planning a visit, be aware of the potentially large and difficult-to-heat rooms. However, the onsen is a definite plus, and the innkeeper's willingness to assist guests is commendable. Depending on the time of year and your tolerance for cooler temperatures, this Ryokan could still be a worthwhile experience, especially if you value excellent...
Read moreFirst of all, the hotel was named something else then on our booking, so we didn't find it right away. Second, the staff couldn't speak one single English word. The room was too simple for the price. We knew it was a ryokan, but the madress thing was hidden and hard to find. We could hear all sounds from around us. No shower except public ones in the "onsen", and where you change clothes is poorly covered so you can see right trough it from the hall, so some guys passed me when I changed. Check out was 10:00, and exact 10:00 they called our room to tell us to check out! That is so rude. They were not any friendly at all. We asked to store our luggage there when we wanted to walk around, but that wasn't possible. They also had to look up what it meant. And when they said another place we could store it, they were just small lockers. And then we walked back to sit in the lobby until the train, but they locked the doors!! 10.40! I've never met so unfriendly staff before....
