We just returned from 8 days at Maruni Ryokan and this place delivers on every level. The location in Happo made things very easy as it was less than a 5 minute walk to Happo Bus Terminal, 10 minutes to the Happo One Gondola and a number of great restaurants and a couple of bars are all within 5 minutes walk. It snowed all week we were there so we ate out in Happo every night until the last night when we ventured a little further to Wadano which was only a 10 minute walk away. After a solid days skiing it was so nice coming home to Maruni Ryokan. Immediately warm and cosy when you walk inside, the onsite onsen is a great way to relax the muscles and the japanese style rooms were surprisingly spacious and the futon beds were very comfortable. Each morning we were served a japanese breakfast with lots of different plates that was both delicious and filling and changed every day. Fast wifi throughout the whole hotel. What really made this place so special were the owners Shino and her family who looked after us so well. Nothing was too much trouble and they were able to help with anything we needed - it was incredible. It was my first visit to Hakuba but the others in my group have been coming every year for 8 or 9 years and have said this is the best they've stayed at in this price range . Cant wait for next year, thanks...

For those who want to go a bit further, its location near the Bus Terminal and various bus stops makes it easy to reach the other resorts in the Hakuba Valley. The family who run Ryokan Maruni and very welcoming, friendly and helpful. My Japanese-style room was quite large and had lovely views of the mountains. It was comfortable and clean, providing ample storage space for luggage. The dry room in the basement was also more than adequate, ensuring dry boots and gloves in the morning. Ryokan Manuri does a lovely breakfast, catering to both Asian and Western tastes and also serves a lovely Japanese-style dinner (pre-booking required at least a day ahead). Close to restaurants it also provides a shared fridge and microwave for days you just want to keep things simple. For overall convenience, comfort and quality service, this one is hard to...
ย ย ย Read moreStayed at Maruni for 4 nights during the 24-25 ski season and had a comfortable stay. We had hearty breakfast every morning (without repeated dishes) to fill us for the slopes, and in house natural onsen to soak away the fatigue afterwards. The family put a lot of effort in making sure our stay was a pleasant one. Communication in simple English was not an issue, and there is always Google translate to help. They were also kind enough to give us a lift to snow peak hakuba for us to catch our bus out of Hakuba.
The location is easily accessible by Hakuba Shuttle from JR Hakuba station (drop off at Happo Bus Terminal and make a short walk). Trips to the ski resorts are also very convenient. There is free Happo Shuttle Bus to Happo One (can take from โMountโ station which is nearer, very inconspicuous, outside Woody Rental). Iwatake can be reached by taking the Hakuba Shuttle at Happo Bus Terminal.
Overall it was a great stay and will definitely consider again for our next...
