The location is great; plenty of places to eat and drink within walking distance. We are here in the autumn, so the vibe has been pretty chill; I imagine during ski season this town would be insanely crowded & hectic. We’ve used the private onsen twice and loved it. Very relaxing. Haven’t eaten here, as we did not know we had to book in advance, but oh well (no regrets — there’s an amazing Mexican / Japamex place just a few minutes away by foot). The only negative really was that the toilets are across the hall from your room (but you get your own toilet room with a key; it isn’t shared), but that isn’t actually a negative once you get used to it. ‘Just means you might need to change out of your pjs in the morning (unless you aren’t shy hehe). The couple who run this place are absolutely lovely hosts. Seriously, top notch hospitality! Very friendly and helpful, and they speak enough English that communication has not been a problem at all. They even offered to pick us up from the train station, as it was bucketing down when we arrived. Thank you Tsune...
Read moreWe loved our stay at Pension Tomato. The host was really kind and picked us up from the train station in Hakuba. Along with this, when dropping us off after our stay, he stopped at the Yamato centre so we could send ski bags to the next accomodation, a huge help.
We stayed in the 6 bunk lodge, fantastic. The amenities were very, very clean and comfortable. The shower was excellent. Spacious enough, with a nice area to relax in and kitchen bench to make easy meals. We also utilised the in-house onsens - a great choice as they were incredibly relaxing and peaceful after a ski, really clean and nice tranquil forest views. There are multiple, bookable for mixed or non-mixed onsens. The breakfast which you book the day before is great too.
A few minutes walk from the main echoland strip and rental place for ski/snow gear. That’s where shuttles for Happo-One and Hakuba 47 stop too, so convenient to get to the mountains in the morning.
We would go back in a heartbeat, thank you to the Pension Tomato team!...

An unforgettable experience! ||||My husband and I went mountain climbing for two days and we decided to stay here to relax our bodies before heading back to Tokyo. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by friendly staff (owner I presume) . We stayed in room 103, and it was perfect! There was a nice seating area at the top and the beds were located below: perfect for laying down and watching tv. ||||They had 2 private baths : both were very clean and one had an open air bath as well. If you're like me and are not comfortable with being naked in front of strangers, this would be perfect for you! I was able to loosen my muscles and really relax in comfort with my husband (something that you can't really do in usual baths since male/female rooms are separated). You have to book the baths on a sign up sheet: busy times will allow for a 30 min slot, and I believe it was 45 mins for slow times. ||||The highlight would have to be the food. Both my husband and I left extremely satisfied (and full). I felt like I was eating at a fine dining restaurant. I could tell that a lot of thought, time, and effort were put into creating the dishes. Not only was the food absolutely delicious, the food kept coming. Climbing down for 8 hours made us very hungry, but I left feeling extremely full and satisfied. (please refer to photos I have uploaded)||||Unfortunately, my husband had an injury while our decent, but they were kind enough to give us a bag of ice several times during our stay. The owner even drove us to the bus station the next day! I highly++ recommend staying here! ||||I've been in japan for just over half a year and I have been to several ryokans, and while this place may not be a traditional style ryokan, it was a perfect place for some R&R. Since the place can only fit a limited amount of people, they really put their time and effort into pleasing the guests. It was a nice change not eating a buffet in a large crowded dining hall and sharing a bath with numerous strangers ;)...
