You need only walk in with the clothes you're wearing to this luxury ryokan, because they provide you with all else. Even a waterproof pouch to carry your keys, phone etc to the onsen ! We stepped into our yukatas on arrival and only stepped out of them to wander through the charming village of Suzenji. ( My favourite shrine was the peaceful little one here.) ||||The calm & service at Taizanso was incredible. The staff's only aim is to please and make you feel totally at home. The chef outdid himself at every meal and provided us with as many as 11 delicious courses (the price includes breakfast & dinner & is totally worth it.) The food is beautifully presented in the most attractive pottery. Though i enjoy Japanese cuisine in its variety, i am not up to eating fish in the early a.m.. Without my having to say anything, the staff & chef understood and i was given an omelette, toast & juice, along with a sumptuous Japanese breakfast on our second morning. ||||Our room was a large duplex. Downstairs we had a Japanese style living area and upstairs , ours was a western style bedroom & bath. (you can opt for tatami mats as well.) There are 2 onsens, one indoor, the other outdoors. I quickly became an aficionada and spent a lot of time in both, as also in the massage chair in the lobby. (complete with blanket.) ||||The only drawback, if one can call it that, is that wifi is available only in the lobby area. But if you're planning a complete getaway from it all, this should be welcome .||Treat yourself to this...

The onsen water itself was exceptional. With only a few rooms in the hotel, the public bath was rarely crowded; I often found myself as the only user, which made for a truly relaxing experience. The most impressive aspect of my stay was the onsen dinner. The meal was high-quality, featuring many small, heartwarming touches and details. The seafood and vegetables were exceptionally fresh, all locally sourced, and the traditional dishes included a modern twist that made them even more enjoyable. The house sake complemented the meal beautifully.
My room was clean and well-kept, featuring a unique two-story layout that added to the experience. The traditional Japanese tatami and wood flooring created a cozy atmosphere. However, the washroom being on the lower floor posed a bit of inconvenience, as it required navigating a steep wooden staircase while still half-asleep. Nevertheless, it added an interesting element to my stay.
The hotel is surrounded by beautiful Japanese gardens and natural sightseeing spots, making evening strolls after a hearty meal particularly enjoyable.
Overall, I loved everything about this hotel and highly recommend it to travelers seeking an authentic traditional onsen experience. Two thumbs up for...
Read moreWe had a wonderful stay at Akari et Kaori in spring of 2024. Everything from service, room appliances, toiletries, dinner, breakfast everything was of a very high standard. Every staff we met was highly polite, friendly and helpful. All meals we had was of extremely high quality and delicious. We would like to thank you especially to Aoyama-san who explain to us every dish carefully, even with the language barrier and he was very helpful to us during our entire stay. The hotel is in a very good location in the town, walking nearby to beautiful streets and landmarks of Shuzenji. The hotel let us borrow beautiful yukata to wear to outside. Many little details show that the owners and staff put a lot of care into this wonderful hotel. The only sad thing is the shared onsen baths are quite small. Someone who enjoys many and large baths may not like it. But this doesn't affect the overall positive experience of the ryokan for me. Thank you to everyone at Akari et Kaori. I would love to stay here again if I have...
