To avoid navigating the trams with our luggage, we took a cab from Kagoshima-Chuo and arrived the hotel in about 10 minutes. It’s about a 5 min walk to the tram stop if you choose to go via public transport.||||Check in & check out was fast and easy. Reception was pleasant. They called us a cab when we needed one to head back to the train station. We found that quite a lot of people in Kagoshima can speak English, significantly more so than Kyoto, so communication in general was easier overall.||||We stayed in a Non-Smoking Standard Queen room. The bed was firm, large and comfortable. The pillow ‘buffet’ outside the lift on each floor was a nice touch. I really enjoyed sleeping on their grainy stone pillows - try it if you haven’t! It provides great support and firmness for your neck and head. The room is compact but very clean and laid out well. As long you’re not traveling with a large open-flat suitcase, two people should be able to move around the room with the occasional squeeze here and there.||||The bathroom is extremely compact. I’m pretty short at 5’1” and still tend to knock into the wall or sink. The tub is small but the water pressure is great, and they provide you with all the usual amenities, including a face mask! That’s a first! There’s a bar in the lobby you can help yourself to for additional toiletries. While I didn’t mind the small bathroom, the exhaust fan was just too weak for it. All the leftover steam made the bathroom feel claustrophobic. I think that may also the cause of the sour smell lingering in the bathroom, kind of like a damp towel that got wet before it could dry. It wasn’t actually any of the towels or the shower curtain - I checked! Those were very clean. The bathroom also needs a good, deep clean as there are strong water marks over the mirror and taps. There is also mould at the typical corners which should be addressed soon before it gets any worse. Everything else was great otherwise.||||One word of notice though, the hotel is conveniently located, but it also seems to be surrounded by a men’s ‘entertainment’ district. That said, the area isn’t seedy at all, but there are a number of large billboards featuring lingerie-clad women. We were there over the weekend though, which may not be the peak hours for these types of...

Read moreNot knowing anything about Kagoshima, I chose this typical business hotel because of its location, between the train station and the port. Tenmonkan is full of bars, restaurants and shopping. Also near the tram which we didn't use. Reception looks a bit cluttered with bookshelves, an assortment of shampoos and conditioners for guests who would like something other than the usual offerings that were in the bathroom, seating and Halloween goods for sale. The rooms however were of good size, plenty of power points, comfortable good size bed and the biggest tv that I've ever seen in a business hotel. Great to watch the baseball on. Our daughter was in the room next door and she was pleased with her room as well. Near the elevators there were a selection of pillows for guest to use for free should they find the one in the room not to their liking. Breakfast could be had for ¥800 if a ticket was prepurchased the day prior, otherwise it was ¥1000 walk up. Quite a good assortment of mainly Japanese cuisine but also had western foods. I liked it. All in all a good place to stay to visit...
