We didn't quite realize we were booking a popular destination for tourists and locals alike during Golden week weekend lol. As you can imagine the hotels were booked up like crazy. We found this place and booked immediately because it was in our price range at least. Overall this is a great place and I have no complaints at all. The first and foremost is--this is an Incredible location! A very short walk to the castle and famous gardens, there is a small garden area with a tea retreat inside, and a small scenic hike through the garden areas will take you to a slew of nightlife and eateries. It truly is one of the best locations I've ever seen in an affordable hotel. The staff are courteous and check in was quick and easy. Check out is even easier. The room itself is cute! We got the twin bed Japanese style room. The beds are fine nothing awful or great about them. The window is a lovely view too! Toilet and shower are shared but there aren't many rooms so I didn't have any traffic so to speak using any of it. Everything was clean. A 5-6 min walk away is one of the fanciest coin laundry 24 hr places I've ever been to. They even have a sneaker washer and dryer.
While I am absolutely grateful and I love this place and would 100% stay here again I should mention this is above a sushi restaurant that stays open late. It's an Old building built in a traditional way. That means noise travels easily. If you are someone that sleeps Early and Very lightly and Cannot use ear plugs this might not be the best choice for you. I don't have that issue but it's worth mentioning. Also this place has narrow stairs. Not a bother for me but some might find it so. I don't travel heavy but if you have like 3 large suitcases for 2 people I don't know if the Japanese tatami room is the best choice for you. I recommend this place, but with those caveats and...
Read moreWe stayed here towards the end of October and it was a really special experience. We booked the Superior Room for three nights and it was comfortable, clean, and very convenient to the best restaurant in the City. (You literally walk through a door into the restaurant). We had our own private bathroom (with Washlet) and private entrance on the side of the building. The bed was very comfortable and the room was large enough to store our bags. It's in a quiet neighbourhood just ten minutes walk to Kenrokuen garden and the Kanazawa Castle ramparts. We found it central to everything and only about a 30 minute casual walk to the Samurai district and Omicho market. It's a short walk to the main tourist bus route, but Kanazawa is a very walkable city with excellent signage (in English) and a bounty of spotless public washrooms.||The best thing about Atsushi for us was that the proprietors really made us feel at home, literally like we were part of the family. They even opened the restaurant on their night off to make us dinner. Of course you've read the reviews of others, but it's worth repeating: this was the best sushi we had in all of our travels in Japan. We didn't find the portions small at all, in fact, the tempura grilled chicken roll was so big and so filling, we canceled our tuna roll. The sashimi platter was a work of art and the prices were very reasonable. We ate at Atsushi every night of our Kanazawa stay because we couldn't imagine the food being better...
Read moreWe had dinner at Atsushi on our first night in Kanazawa and I have to say the meal was outstanding. I’ve eaten a lot of sashimi and sushi in my time, but even so, the quality, flavours, and attention to detail by Feodor and Atsushi puts it up with my favourite meals ever. |Mrs Ex-Punk and myself shared a Crab Miso soup and a sashimi plate as starters, both of which were delicious. We followed these with three sushi plates - Green Tiger Rolls (prawn tempura, avocado, cucumber and spicy tuna), Spider Rolls (crispy fried soft shelled crab, flying fish roe, cucumber, mayo) , and Spicy Tuna Scallop Rolls (Spicy tuna, scallop, chilli). The portions were generous, so we paced ourselves, which also meant that the delicious flavours stayed on our palates a little longer. The wines by the glass available perfectly complemented the wonderful food. The restaurant is beautifully designed to complement the lovely old building it is in, which is in a quiet backstreet right next to the castle and Kenroku-en Garden. |Co-owner Feodor was delightful throughout and even helped us improve our colloquial Japanese. So all we can say is...
