It seems to be a ritual for many people to taste or eat gold when they visit Kanazawa. The easiest way is to buy a gold leaf ice cream. The Hakuichi has a shop near the entrance of Kenrokuen selling gold leaf products as well as ice cream. You pay a few hundred yen more and get a piece of gold leaf to cover the ice cream. I paid a total of 890 yen for a cone of gold leaf soft ice cream. The shopkeeper will invite you to take a photo or video when she is working on the gold leaf. To me, the gold does not have any taste at all but it just felt special and luxurious.

Like many other things in Kanazawa, this otherwise plain vanilla soft serve is dressed in gold. It doesn’t taste like anything and I can’t say if it contributes anything health wise. Definitely a gimmick, but a fun experience. The store has a plethora of gold/ gold-accented accessories and housewares and also sells gold flakes you can add to your own food at home. On a street with many souvenir and kutani porcelain shops.

Known for its long tradition of gold leaf making in Kanazawa, apparently the world's first gold-leaf ice cream is served here, priced at 891 yen. Tried it for the experience.
